The world in Assassin’s Creed Shadows is massive. It’ll take you a long time to run between objectives, let alone from one side of the map to another. To speed things up, you’ll want to get a better horse. Since you can’t upgrade the basic horse you’re given for free, you’ll need to find a better one.

Don’t worry, Yasuke doesn’t always have to be wearing headgear.

Horses work like any other piece of gear in Assassin’s Creed Shadows. You can find mounts of different rarity from various sources, and we’d recommend you do so as soon as you can. The increased speed makes a massive difference.

How To Get New Horses

There are two ways to get horses in Assassin’s Creed Shadows. The first and easiest way is to buy them from vendors. However, there aren’t horse-specific vendors you can find.

Instead, you’ll find horses at random vendors. We found Ornament Vendors the most reliable, with the one in the starting region selling a great one you can pick up early in the game.

Alternatively, you can get new horses as rewards for winning Horse Archery events, represented by orange horse icons on the map. Once you’ve completed them, you’ll get a horse as a reward, as well as some XP and a Knowledge Point.

You can also buy new saddles to fit to new horses, since they are initially bought without them.

How To Change Horse

Once you have bought or earned a new horse, you’ll need to actually equip it. Helpfully, it works like any other piece of gear.

Head into your inventory and you’ll see a horse icon to the right of your equipped weapons. Select that any you’ll be able to change your horse to the better one. Next time you hold down on the d-pad to call your horse, the new one will appear.

While buying a horse unlocks it for both characters in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, equipping it in your inventory only makes it active for the character you’re using at the time.
