Assassin’s Creed: Shadows features a giant world that you can explore, but it only opens up after you go through a few hours of prologue. Once you get to the point where you can freely explore, there are a ton of other activities apart from the main story to get character EXP and knowledge points.

Completing these Assassin’s Creed games takes a lot of work.
One of these activities is the various side quests scattered around the world. The Butterfly Collector is one of the early side quests that you can find, and it’ll ask you to find ten origami butterflies on trees and then assassinate certain targets.
Where To Find The Butterfly Collector Quest
Your prologue majorly ends once you get your own hideout, after which you can go anywhere on the map as long as you can face the enemy level there. However, you won’t have to go far to get The Butterfly Collector quest as it can be found near the Katano Castle to the northwest of the hideout.
The Izumi Settsu area is divided into two chunks of land, and you’ll find this quest on the same chunk as the hideout once you move to the top left side near the river. It can be found near an ornament trader to the left of Katano Castle and is given to you by a random woman.
All Butterfly Locations
In the first part of the quest, the random woman will ask you to find ten butterflies in the western Osaka region since the kids she was expecting didn’t come to play her game. This region can be found by heading to the southwest from the quest location, and you’ll see a giant village once you reach here.
To start finding the butterflies, you have to get to the left chunk of the village with the Osaka Kakurega on it. Once you get there, here’s how you can find all the butterflies:
When you’re in the general areas described below, you can use your observe mode to see blue shining light at butterfly locations.
Number |
Type |
How To Reach |
---|---|---|
1 |
Green Origami Butterfly |
The first butterfly can be found on the little western part of the village to the right of the river going through it, in the section to the right of the Kakurega. You’ll have to climb through a home’s boundary wall to get it. |
2 |
Secret Origami Letter from Richo |
After getting the first butterfly, move in the northwestern direction until you reach the river going through this part of the village. You’ll find this butterfly on a tree beside the river. |
3 |
Yellow Origami Butterfly |
From the second butterfly, travel directly to the group of houses on the western side and you’ll get this butterfly. |
4 |
Secret Origami Letter from Shucho |
Get to the Osaka Kakurega and go along the river bank in the southern direction until you find this butterfly on a tree. |
5 |
Red Origami Butterfly |
After getting the third butterfly, take the road leading south and you’ll find this one on the first road going to your right. |
6 |
Blue Origami Butterfly |
You’ll find the Fisherman’s District red area on the bottom-left side of the area, and this butterfly can be found right above it. |
7 |
Orange Origami Butterfly |
You can find this one near the river bank to the southeastern edge of Fisherman’s District. |
8 |
Secret Origami Message from Mucho |
After getting the seventh butterfly above, travel to the northern river bank in the same area and you can find it on a tree near it. |
9 |
Purple Origami Butterfly |
From butterfly number eight, you can head directly northeast until you cross the river going through this part of the village and find the butterfly on the other side beside a street lamp. |
10 |
Pink Origami Butterfly |
Once you get the above butterfly, travel directly in the southwestern direction until you reach the bottom left edge of the village where you can find this one on a tree. |
Where To Find The Child In Shucho’s Letter
If you’ve collected the butterflies in the order mentioned above, you’ll already find the first child while getting the last butterfly as it’s in the same location. Shucho’s letter in the Origami butterfly mentions an escaped child near the Fisherman’s District, and the clue is that the child is near a horse.
You can find a stable in the southwestern side of the market where you’ll see the blue marker for the child. After talking to her, she’ll go home by herself and you can find Shucho by getting out of the stables from the southern direction and following the road to the east. She’ll be standing in the middle of the road at a distance.
There will be a few guards beside her that will attack you if you try to assassinate her.
The best thing to do here is to get rid of the guards first and then fight Shucho as she has three health bars and you likely won’t have enough upgrades to be able to assassinate her in one go at this point. After removing the guards from the equation, you can freely defeat Shucho and move on to the next part.
Where To Find The Child In Mucho’s Letter
Once you get Mucho’s origami letter, the clues for the second kidnapped child will be given to you as Kojo Ruins. These can be found on the northern side of the village by crossing the river and getting to the northwestern chunk of the island. You’ll find the child with Mucho on the left of the ruins.
When you get near, Mucho will start running but you can easily assassinate her as she only has two bars. Of course, the guards nearby will get suspicious when you do that so you’ll have to either quickly hide or deal with them.
After doing this bit of the quest, you can also head to the house group to the northwest of Fisherman’s District and you’ll find a random letter mentioning the leader in a cabin here.
Where To Find The Child In Richo’s Letter
The final kidnapped child in this quest can be found near a burnt well, which is on the northeast section of the western part of Osaka village. Head to the Kakurega in this area and stick to the river bank while heading north until you see the blue shine to your left while in observe mode.
After reaching the well, you’ll get another direction that’ll take you farthest away from the western village in this quest so far. After your quest gets updated, move straight in the northeastern direction until you cross the river three times and get to the northern side of Osaka castle.
You’ll find Noda Village here and the blue shine in the bamboo grove to the north of it.
You can easily assassinate Richo beside a small cabin here and then find the child in it. Follow the kid to her mother and you’ll get some special trinkets.
How To Find Kacho
The final part of the quest requires you to find a paper merchant who can reveal Kacho’s location to you. He can be found in the same western part of the village just above the marker of Temple of Osaka, and he’ll tell you that the buyer is in Nishinomaru Garden, which is a hostile area.
You can find it on the left of Osaka Castle and enter it through a gap in the wall with some wooden platforms on the left side. Follow the blue mark from here and you’ll reach Kacho, who can’t be assassinated and you’ll have to win a proper duel against her.
Kacho has fast attacks and little reaction time, so you’ll have to be ready for the blue and red circles from her attacks, especially if you’re low level.
Once you defeat her, she’ll tell you that the lady who gave you this quest was also a part of this group. When you go back and talk to her, you’ll get to give her a new name and then decide her fate. If you let her go, you can get the Butterfly of Benevolence trinket. which can be equipped on Yasuke later on.
