By this point in your playthrough of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, you should have a pretty good idea of how the main assassination missions go – scout out the target, find out more about them, gather some allies, and then prepare for the final blow.

That formula is kept throughout most of the targets, but there are a few that buck the trend. Case in point, The Mourner, who has a lot more story importance than the others. Here’s everything you need to know to reach those climatic moments.
An Education
Where To Find Nobutsuna Sensei
The Mourner’s assassination missions start out a little weirdly, as they’re also directly tied to Yasuke’s personal story, setting the tone for the whole questline. The first thing you’re going to need to do is find Nobutsuna, who is at Azuchi’s castle and conveniently marked on your map. Go here and Yasuke will find an item that reminds him of his past, starting a lengthy flashback for a mission called “Nobutsuna Sensei”.
This flashback quest is fairly linear and starts with you having to follow a retainer before getting into a few simple duels that shouldn’t be a challenge at this point in the game. Yasuke will also meet Lady Oichi for the first time, who you can even choose to flirt with a little if you like. After a few more scenes involving a quick chase, some Kata, and some more chatting, Yasuke will duel for his honour.
Yasuke’s fight against the three rival school members is easy enough if you’ve been playing as him for a while but, since you don’t have your special moves, it’s worth remembering the basics of sword combat, such as dodging heavy attacks and parrying everything else. Beyond that, it’s a simple fight that then opens up a new mission chain and ends the flashback.
A Talk With A Lady
Where To Find Lady Oichi
Once you’ve cleared that flashback, your next mission will involve finding Lady Oichi, who was introduced in the last quest. Lady Oichi is located in the ruins of Odani in Omi but, as usual, we’ve got the map marker above so you don’t need to waste your Scouts.
Even if you’re unlikely to return again, make sure to get the nearby Synchronization Point to get another fast-travel point.
Head to this area and have a chat with Lady Oichi to set up the quest line. After Naoe is done teasing Yasuke, you’ll get to choose who to control next, which is entirely up to you. Either way, make your choice and get ready for the next mission.
The Price Of Rice
Where To Meet Kuma And Find The Corrupt Daikan
You’ll get to choose your next quest, but I went with The Price of Rice, which asks you to find Kuma. The description says he’s in Northern Shimmering Fields, but that’s a bit vague as he’s actually closer to the West of Azuchi. Head over to the map marker above and you’ll easily find him, though.
Kuma will then ask you to go and talk to some farmers, who are marked on the map for you and not far away. Chat with them and they’ll tell you about a drunkeb samurai who is causing trouble in the fields and needs to be taken out. The samurai is Level 22 and packs a decent punch, so I’d recommend playing as Yasuke to make it a fair fight. He still doesn’t have many unique moves, but he’s still a tough challenger.
Once you’ve defeated the drunken samurai, head back to the farmers and they’ll ask you to take on his boss, a “corrupt daikan”. You’ll need to find his location, which is said to be in Omi near the Daikan Mansion. We’ve marked it above, so head over here to confront him. Once you get into Daikan Mansion, the corrupt Daikan will be standing around and can be taken out incredibly easily without a fight.
Just be careful of the guards who are bound to come running after he’s killed. After this, you simply need to head back to Kuma to end the mission and clear off another part of The Mourner’s questline.
Nagahama Black Powder
Where To Find The Teppo Factory
The next part of the quest involves a trip to the Teppo Factory, which can be found in the Nagahama docks to the West of Ibu Highlands. Head over here and make sure to grab the nearby Synchronization Point to make travelling back an easier task. The Teppo Factory is a big area with lots of enemies, but the climbable walls make it a great mission for Naoe to take on.
Get inside the factory area and you’ll be told to look for clues. As ever, hold down LT on Xbox or L2 on PS5 to Observe the area and look for blue dots to be investigated. The clue you’re looking for is a note called The Nagahama Plot, which is located on a walkway right near the water and on top of some big red pots.
Read the note and you’ll be told to stop the gunpowder shipment that’s on a nearby boat. The boat is just across the water and an easy swim away, so head on over there. Just like the Teppo Factory, the boat is crowded with enemies, but the thing you’re looking for is a Horokubiya Bomb that’s located on the second floor of the boat.
You can either choose to kill all the enemies and clear the boat out or just grab the bomb and place it on the gunpowder before making your escape by diving off the boat. Either way, place the Bomb where the marker is and jump into the water to end the mission.
A Prayer For Omi
Where To Meet Lady Oichi
After all that stress and murdering in the last mission, it’s time for a bit of a break with a more relaxing mission. In this quest, Yasuke must go to meet Lady Oichi, who can be found near Lake Biwa close to Azuchi. Head over here for a boat ride with Lady Oichi that’s mostly just setting up her and Yasuke’s relationship.
When you get to the island, you’ll need to participate in four rituals that are marked clearly for you when you Observe by holding down LT or R2. Complete these rituals to progress the quest to its near end, which is a chat between Yasuke and Lady Oichi. The dialogue choices here aren’t too important, but you can once again flirt with Oichi if you so choose. Finish the chat to complete the mission altogether.
The Wheel Unmasked
Where To Find The Rendezvous Point
Now that you’ve had a relaxing time, it’s right back to the task at hand. The first thing you’ll need to do is find the rendezvous point, which is located in eastern Shiotsu inside the town’s shrine. Use a Scout, or go straight to where we’ve marked on the map above to get started. You’ll be presented with a choice between Naoe and Yasuke, who both have different missions.
The in-game target for The Wheel is strangely “The Mourner”. I have no clue why Yasuke and Naoe say the wheel, but perhaps it’s both.
Naoe is the easier choice here, since her mission is mostly stealth, so pick her and move towards the marker on the map to track down The Wheel’s location. You’ll need to Observe a noble who is talking to find out where to find The Wheel, so make sure you do that to open the next objective, which is to kill the Shinbakufu samurai close to where you are.
Kill the Shinbakufu samurai however you please, although it’s best to approach with stealth if you can to take away some of his health before attacking him normally. Killing the samurai will progress the mission and have you returning back to the rendezvous point to meet up with Yasuke.
The next part of the mission brings you to an island where The Wheel is located, and you’ll get to choose between playing as Yasuke or Naoe again. There’s not really a proper boss fight this time around, but it’s still better to go with Yasuke since you’ll be clearing the island out of enemies and have a lot of people to fight.
When you get to the island, you’ll have a ton of The Wheel’s allies to take out, who are mostly just the same enemies you’ve been fighting up to this point without much to them. Take them all out as Yasuke or sneak around as Naoe until you reach the blue dot where the Wheel is located. The only tough enemy here is one of the Corrupt Daikan called The Hoarder, but even he goes down easily.
Should You Spare Or Attack The Mourner?
Here comes the big reveal – The Mourner is actually Lady Oichi. Considering the name and her backstory, it’s not too much of a surprise, but it does leave you with a big choice – to spare her as Yasuke or attack her as Naoe. Sparing Lady Oichi doesn’t have any consequences and actually opens up another quest with a romance option for Yasuke called The Wheel Turns.
If you choose to attack as Naoe, there actually isn’t any consequence for doing so, as her partner will take the fall and won’t even be killed. You’ll get a bit of tension, but Lady Oichi ends up being spared no matter what you choose. For your efforts, you’ll cross off another Shinbakfu member and get a Legendary Long Katana called the Myth Slayer.
