In Naruto Shippuden, Madara showed everyone just how terrifying he really is by summoning enormous meteorites from the sky and having them crash upon his enemies. Before that, he was already an incredibly dangerous threat, taking on the entire Fourth Division by himself. Things only started to even out when Gaara, Ōnoki (the Third Tsuchikage), and one of Naruto‘s shadow clones arrived to back up the Fourth Division. But even these three powerful shinobi could barely stand up to Madara’s might once he started dropping meteorites on top of them.
How exactly does Madara summon or create meteorites? Are they even real, or are they just a product of genjutsu? The Uchiha with their Sharingans are infamous for their Genjutsu after all. And if they are real, does he create them out of chakra, or where do they come from?

Tengai Shinsei
Madara’s Meteor Pulling Jutsu
First and foremost, the meteorites Madara brings down are very much real. He uses a ninjutsu called Tengai Shinsei, or Shattered Heaven in English, to bring them down. Additionally, the jutsu doesn’t create the meteors; it just pulls them from the Earth’s upper atmosphere. This raises some questions though, like why are there so many of these gigantic rocks just hovering above Earth? You’d think that if they were that big and that close to the planet, people would at least mention them, or you could see them in the sky at one point or another in Naruto‘s 700+ episode run. Unfortunately, there isn’t really an answer to this, so you’d just have to suspend disbelief and accept that there are giant space rocks hovering close to Earth in the Naruto universe.
“A giant boulder big enough to block out the sky has been dropped onto Fourth Company’s battlefield!!” – Inoichi Yamanaka of the Intelligence Division
To perform Tengai Shinsei, Madara uses three hand seals simultaneously by using his and his Susanoo’s hands. The jutsu then pulls a meteorite from Earth’s upper atmosphere toward a location of Madara’s choosing. Tengai Shinsei is so devastating that it obliterated Madara himself, and was only able to survive thanks to having an immortal reanimated body. Though it was never explicitly stated in the manga or anime, the Tengai Shinsei is likely related to the Deva Path of the Six Paths Technique. This is the same path that allows its user to manipulate attractive and repulsive forces, which is shown through its most iconic jutsu: the Shinra Tensei (Almighty Push) and the Banshō Ten’in (Universal Pull). Tengai Shinsei likely uses the Banshō Ten’in, or some variation of it, combined with the Susanoo to amplify its attractive force, allowing Madara to pull massive meteorites from Earth’s upper atmosphere. At the very least, Tengai Shinsei requires the Rinnegan, since Kabuto commented on the jutsu being related to the Sage of Six Path’s power.
Fun fact: Tengai Shinsei was never named in the Naruto Shippuden manga and anime. It only received its name in the Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 video game since Madara is a playable character here and the Tengai Shinsei is one of his ultimate attacks.

Banshō Ten’in (Universal Pull)
As stated earlier, Tengai Shinsei may very well use Banshō Ten’in to pull meteorites out of orbit. This jutsu, granted by the Deva Path, uses attractive forces to pull matter toward its user. The user can also pick which items or people get affected by the Banshō Ten’in, so an object directly touching a target could be left unaffected should the user will it. Its only weakness is the required five-second cooldown between uses, similar to the Shinra Tensei. As it requires the Deva Path from the Six Paths Technique, this move also requires a Rinnegan to use; look no further than its most iconic user for proof: Nagato AKA Pain.
Chibaku Tensei (Planetary Devastation)
Chibaku Tensei creates a black sphere that pulls objects toward it, usually resulting in a large ball of rubble. The jutsu is commonly used to restrain the user’s opponent by having them be trapped in the center of all the rock, debris, and whatever else it pulls. However, Madara uses it a little differently, as he actually launches the formed rock spheres at his opponent, similar to how he uses Tengai Shinsei.
Jutsu That Only Appear in the Naruto Video Games
Though Tengai Shinsei doesn’t really have any direct variations in the anime and manga, it does have a couple in the Naruto video games. It’s only fitting since the video games gave the jutsu its name in the first place. Here are all the Tengai Shinsei variations that have popped up over the years.
- Tensō Tsuisei (Heavenly Insertion Hammering Star) – Naruto Shippūden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Revolution – Team Ultimate Jutsu between Obito Uchiha and Madara Uchiha
- Tengai Shinsei: Sen (Shattered Heaven: Pierce) – Naruto Shippūden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 – one of Madara Uchiha’s ninjutsu in his awakened Susanoo form
- Rinbo: Tengai Shinsei (Limbo: Tengai Shinsei) – Naruto x Boruto: Ninja Voltage – one of Madara Uchiha‘s Ultimate Jutsu
- Tenhōjimetsu – Naruto x Boruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm Connections – Team Ultimate Jutsu between Indra Otsutsuki, Madara Uchiha, and Sasuke Uchiha.
