In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, the skills for each character are split into themed trees. There are sets of skills, called Mastery Skills here, which are focused on the weapons each character can wield and the way they move.

The skills aren’t all available from the start, though. You need to increase your Knowledge Rank to get access to more skills. In the early hours of the game, you’ll be able to unlock a limited set of Mastery skills for Naoe, but there are still some you should spend your hard-earned points on first.
Melee Expert
Katana
While it is smart to focus on skills for whatever weapon is your favourite in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, the Katana category has the most skills that are worth unlocking. Melee Expert increases damage with melee weapons, so it’s pretty self-explanatory. You’ll be able to kill enemies faster with the skill unlocked.
Melee Expert is a three-tier Mastery Skill in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, increasing the damage dealt each time you spend points on the skill.
Tidal Wave
Katana
Tidal Wave is likely the first attack Ability you’ll unlock for Naoe. The attack is an extremely fast strike dealing 35 percent ability damage and making the enemy vulnerable. You can then attack enemies more for extra damage while they’re dazed.
Further on in the Katana tree, you can upgrade Tidal Wave further so that it hits twice each time you use it.
Affliction Builder
Kusarigama
Another three-stage skill, Affliction Builder increases the rate at which Affliction builds up. Therefore, you can apply poison and bleed more effectively.
Kunai
Tools
Kunai is a weapon that allows you to get out of trouble quickly and take enemies out silently from afar. If you hold L2/LT to aim, and press R2/RT to throw it, the Kunai will do 400 percent damage. Headshots on unsuspecting enemies will remove two health segments.
Prodigy
Shinobi
Another three-part skill – this time in the Shinobi tree – Prodigy increases the damage you do with Abilities. Just make sure you’ve unlocked Tidal wave first.
Ground Assassinate
Assassin
Finally, Ground Assassinate allows you to assassinate enemies when they’re on the ground, which will be great when you’re able to knock them over in combat.
