Ahead of tomorrow’s season two Severance finale, director and producer Ben Stiller has some good news for fans of the show. While there was a three year break between seasons one and two, the wait shouldn’t be as long this time around. With the show seeing a major bump in popularity and audience since it debuted, that’s great news for a lot of people.
Speaking on Jason and Travis Kelce’s New Heights podcast (and spotted by Indie Wire), Stiller said “hopefully we’ll be announcing what the plan is very soon.” Though the show has not been officially renewed for a third season by Apple, it is widely expected to be greenlit, given it has become a cultural phenomenon unlike any Apple show previously and the clear willingness of cast and crew.
Severance Is Bigger Than Ever This Season
Part of the reason for the show’s three-year absence was the WGA and SAG strike, which meant no work could be done on the show (or dozens of others like it, plus most Hollywood movies) while negotiations continued. Thankfully an equitable solution was reached, and the creators and performers behind our favourite shows can now be fairly compensated for their work.
However, that’s not the only reason. Severance is a very involved show, with many of its unique cinematography coming from practical effects, adding time to shoots – though the results on screen are worth it. “We shot for 186 days on season two,” Stiller told the Kelce brothers on the podcast. “Editing takes a while, but thank goodness the audience was there when we came back.”
He also praised Apple for promoting the show, something it has historically struggled with, and noted the stark difference between the reception to the two seasons. “When we started out, we were one of the first shows.”

The wait for season three will likely only heat up once the season two finale drops, with fans eager to discover more of the show’s internal mystery, find out the fates of their favourite characters, and guess where things go next. Luckily, it seems like Severance intends to answer those questions much faster than it did last time around.
Yellowjackets fans, who also endured a three year wait between seasons which led to a massive rise in viewing figures, will be hoping their wait is similarly short when season three wraps – although expect a few more deaths before then.
