A game as intricate as Baldur’s Gate 3 is bound to have little-known secrets and interactions that the majority of veteran players are still unaware of. For example, approaching a pack of goblins while wild-shaped into a hideous spider triggers some humorous dialogue.

Now, YeezyReddit has highlighted that one of the game’s weapon coatings is actually only available in Act 3 because of how rare the ingredients are. The Oil of Freezing is crafted using three Frost Salamander tongues. There are no actual Frost Salamanders in Baldur’s Gate 3, but there are a couple of tongues lying around the Sword Coast.

A Rare Tincture

“A couple” is a literal term here, because there are only three Frost Salamander Tongues that you can find while exploring Baldur’s Gate 3. There are two in Act 2, one behind the locked door to the Alchemist’s Stash in the Waning Moon, and one buried underneath a dirt mound near the House of Healing. There is one tongue in Act 3, found in the “Offerings to Mystra” box in the Stormshore Tabernacle, near the Basilisk Gate in the Lower City. Helsik also sells this ingredient at the Devil’s Fee, the only recurring way to obtain a Frost Salamander Tongue.

The rarity of this item makes sense from a lore perspective, as Frost Salamanders primarily inhabit the elemental planes and only settle in the material plane in very cold areas. You never venture into a cold area in Baldur’s Gate 3 – this isn’t Icewind Dale, after all.

The oil inflicts Encrusted with Frost for 2 turns if you strike an enemy with an oil-coated weapon. This condition gives opponents disadvantage on dexterity saving throws. Additionally, opponents will have to succeed at a constitution saving throw every turn. If an enemy fails this save, they take 1-4 cold damage and gain the status Frozen.

It’s a decent coating, but far less effective in Act 3 when both the party and their enemies are high-powered. It would be far more effective against the aforementioned pack of goblins than it would be against Orin the Red.

Unfortunately, this coating seems like a waste of perfectly good Frost Salamander tongues. I think I’ll display them on my mantelpiece instead.
