Asus’ new AMD Ryzen motherboard reportedly costs more than three Steam Decks

Asus is reportedly working on a super high-end motherboard for AMD Ryzen CPUs with an extremely high price tag. According to the latest rumors, based on European retailer listings, the price of the new Asus ROG Crosshair X870E Extreme motherboard could be as high as €1,313 (around $1,422), putting it at around twice the price of AMD’s current top-end Ryzen 9950X3D gaming CPU – that could buy you three Steam Decks, and you’d still have some change.

In terms of features, the Asus ROG Crosshair X870E Extreme would have to be the absolute best gaming motherboard you can buy in order to justify that price, and even then it would still be bordering on ridiculous for a component that will be obsolete in a few years. This leak follows the release of the MSI X870E Godlike, which launched at $1,100, showing that there’s potentially a huge upper limit to what some gamers are willing to pay for the ultimate motherboard.

Asus already has form here, with its ROG Crosshair X870E Apex already available for pre-order on Newegg for $749.99, with a release date of April 4, 2025, and Asus did also launch a Crosshair Extreme motherboard based on the older X670E motherboard (pictured above). That’s nowhere near the purported price of the Extreme version, though, with retailer screenshots shared on Videocardz showing prices that start at €1,113 ex VAT (around $1,205) and go all the way up to the aforementioned price of €1,313. Let’s face it, either of those prices is extremely high for a motherboard.

The existence of this board has also been seemingly confirmed by HWiNFO, which added support for it in the latest beta version of its diagnostic tool, naming it in the bullet points. However, Asus hasn’t officially announced this board yet, let alone a price for it, so take this all with a grain of salt for now.

If this board does exist, though, what is all that extra money likely to get you? If the MSI Godlike is a reliable yardstick, we could be looking at multiple LCDs and advanced RGB features on the heatsinks and I/O shield, as well as advanced cable management features, such as side-mounted power connectors.

It would be likely to offer an enormous number of USB ports as well, plus many M.2 connectors, possibly using extra daughterboards. We could also be looking at a premium onboard audio codec and DAC, as well as all the advanced overclocking features you could want.

Will it be worth the money? Almost certainly not in terms of bang per buck, but I’ve always said that there’s nothing wrong with paying more money for a product that looks good, even if it serves the same core purpose as a cheaper product that doesn’t look as pretty. Multiple LCDs and RGB features can add a massive touch of flair to a handsome gaming rig, after all.

We’ll have to wait and see whether Asus does indeed release this rumored board at such a high price. In the meantime, check out our guide to the best gaming CPU, to see which chip you might want to put in such a board.
