Assassin's Creed Shadows Has An Adorable Cat Island That's Based On A Real-Life Location

Summary

  • Japan has become known for its cat islands such as Aoshima.
  • Assassin’s Creed Shadows keeps that cultural landmark with its own cat island called Okishima.
  • That island can be found in Lake Biwa and is actually based on a real-world location of the same name.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows has its own Cat Island that’s full of kittens and cats for Naoe and Yasuke to befriend, and it’s actually based on a real-world location.

For as long as the Assassin’s Creed games have been around, fans have been asking for one of the mainline titles to be set in Feudal Japan, which seems like the perfect setting for the series. Despite my love of Japan, I surprisingly wasn’t one of those joining the chorus for a game set there – that was until I remembered how many cat islands Japan has.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is under major pressure, but is the series equipped to handle that?

If you’re unaware, let me make your week – modern-day Japan has several islands that are absolutely packed with cats, from Aoshima to Tashirojima. Those islands are still a thing now, but they’ve had a reputation for housing cats throughout Japan’s history, which is something I prayed we’d see in Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

You Need To Visit Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ Cat Island

The location of the Cat Island, Okishima, in Assassin's Creed Shadows.

Well, I’m very happy to report that Shadows does indeed have its own cat island for you to discover. The island itself is located in Omi northwest of Azuchi, and it’s Okishima. If you head over there, you’ll find that the relatively small island is home to a bunch of cats and kittens who can be found roaming around or just taking naps near the water.

Okishima is even a part of one of the game’s side-missions, which I won’t spoil for you here. It’s very wholesome, though, and means you’re bound to visit the island if you don’t rush through.

As a fun bonus, you can also choose to pet the cats or kittens as Naoe or Yasuke, who both have unique reactions. Doing so will even let you place the pets in your hideout, essentially letting you make your own cat island. Okishima is actually based on a real-world location that’s still around to this day, as the largest island on Lake Biwa that’s often called the “Town of Cats”.

What’s funny about Okishima is that it’s actually not the most cat-infested place in the game. In my journeys across Feudal Japan, I found a shrine called Umenomiya Taisha Shrine in Kyoto that’s absolutely packed with cats and puts Okishima to shame a little. Make sure to head there to get your real cat fix.
