Why Marvel Rivals Players Are Banning Four Particular Heroes

Why Marvel Rivals Players Are Banning Four Particular Heroes

Marvel Rivals has quickly become a thriving team-oriented PVP title, and a diverse cast of characters has played a big role in that success. In every match, players are given the freedom to choose between 37 of the brand’s most iconic characters, though that number is somewhat reduced in high-ranking competitive matches, as they involve a phase wherein players must remove at least four characters from play. Funnily enough, it is then that a good number of Marvel Rivals players agree to ban four particular heroes, simply because of their ability to ruin the fun for both allies and enemies.

During the banning phase in high-ranking competitive matches, specific heroes are targeted because of the way they can dictate a meta with their power. Recently, a post on Reddit by user jayvancealot has shown that many players agree with the removal of four specific characters, regardless of the current trend: Magik, Spider-Man, Winter Soldier, and Wolverine. While the last one has always been a prime target for being banned, the rest have joined him because they all share the issue of being too annoying to deal with. Although that can be said for all the characters in the roster, especially in the right hands, the four in particular have taken the spotlight and have become the bane of many Marvel Rivals players’ existence.

Why Magik, Spider-Man, Winter Soldier, and Wolverine Have Become High-Priority Bans in Marvel Rivals

When playing competitively in Marvel Rivals, there is a good chance that those at Diamond rank and above will not be able to play with or engage against the four characters listed above. While they aren’t necessarily overpowered, they do have qualities that turn them into some of the most dangerous – and annoying – characters in the hero shooter:

  • Spider-Man’s ability to get in and get out quickly due to his webs, which also allows him to pull players to an early death with the proper positioning, has forced many to keep a constant eye on something that can instantly kill them if caught unaware.
  • Magik’s mobility and high damage make her a quick-moving target and a big problem for many Strategists, as she can quickly kill them off by teleporting in and swinging at least twice, which also allows her to heal herself by 30% of the damage she deals.
  • Wolverine consistently has one of the highest ban rates in Marvel Rivals because of how he can put any opponent out of position by snatching them, shredding even the toughest of characters with his Berserker Rage buff, and being hard to kill because of his regenerative health.
  • Many fear the Winter Soldier because of how he can easily put people out of position with his Bionic Hook, has unlimited ammo if he’s paired with Rocket, and wields an ultimate ability that can be used endlessly if he or his teammates can kill those weakened by it fast enough.

It is easy to see why these four characters have become a problem for players and why they have become targets during the banning phase. Perhaps that could change in the future, as the development team behind Marvel Rivals could release updates that make them less menacing, but it remains to be seen if that will happen – and if it should happen, as there is risk of removing what makes these characters fun.

How Players Can Deal With the Four Problematic Heroes of Marvel Rivals

Barring the Winter Soldier, the one thing that all these characters have in common is that they need to get up close and personal to deal damage. This means that learning how to play Namor, or at least having a teammate who’s skilled at using him, will be an advantage, given the character’s ability to use Monstro Spawns to hit them as soon as they show their face. Also, having Strategists such as Cloak & Dagger and Luna is a must, as their healing output can prevent any of the four from killing too quickly, especially when they use their ultimate abilities. Still, having these characters does not guarantee safety, as they are still susceptible to being easily eliminated by all the commonly banned characters, which means it’s all up to player skill and positioning to ensure that they don’t become too much of a problem.

Although Magik, Spider-Man, Wolverine, and Winter Soldier are currently some of the most hated characters by high-ranking players, perhaps the changes in the upcoming second season of Marvel Rivals could affect people’s perception of them, hopefully for the better. For now, it seems that they will continue to run rampant as some of the most frustrating characters to deal with when used by good players, and as such will remain targets during the banning phase.
