Beluna Grandsquall is one of those cards that will only get better with time. The creature side of Beluna is a respectable 4/4 that causes your permanent spells with the Adventure mechanic to cost one less. If you build your deck right, it will make the majority of your deck a little cheaper to play, which can help accelerate you up in a game.

The more interesting part of Beluna though, is her adventure side. When you cast Seek Thrills, you mill yourself for seven cards, and then take everything you milled with an Adventure and put it in your hand. The odds are pretty good you’ll be grabbing at least a few Adventure cards when you have enough in your deck. As Magic continues to print new cards with the Adventure mechanic, Beluna will only get stronger and more versatile.

Coming from the Universes Beyond: Doctor Who expansion comes Me, the Immortal, a rather unique card that grows stronger the longer it is out in play. Once Me it out and it survives to your combat step, you get to pick one of four counters to put on it. You can repeat counters, so once you get all the extra abilities on her, you can start ramping up the counters.

The unique thing with Me is that counters stay on her anytime she changes zones, other than if it would go into your hand or library, though you can always choose not to have it happen if she’s your commander. She lets you keep all counters on her too, not just the ones she adds, so if you can add a flying counter or even counters that would make her indestructible, they will stick around forever.

One of the more unique commanders to ever be printed comes from a Secret Lair Universes Beyond tie-in with the Tomb Raider universe. Lara Croft, Tomb Raider is all about uncovering legendary artifacts and lands from your graveyard, rewarding you for digging them up. Anytime Lara Croft attacks, you get to exile a legendary artifact or legendary land from anyone’s graveyard, putting a discovery counter on it.

Cards that have a discovery counter on them can be played if Lara Croft’s ability triggers, and even better, she creates a Treasure token after she attacks thanks to her Raid ability. Not only is it incredibly thematic given her history as an explorer and treasure hunter, she can steal your opponent’s legendary cards from their graveyard. With a few ways to mill your opponents or some destruction spells, you can fill all the graveyards up with treasures to steal.

A three-mana Temur commander, Averna, the Chaos Bloom is a solid option for those looking to build a deck around the cascade mechanic. While cards with the cascade mechanic allow you to exile cards from the top of your library until you hit a spell with a lesser mana cost, casting that spell, this mechanic interacts very little with lands.

That’s where Averna comes in. A 4/2 Elemental Shaman, Averna states that when triggering cascade, its controller can put a land from among the cards into play. This allows cascade effects to effectively double as mana ramp as long as Averna is in play.

The Swarmlord is a mix of two different mechanics, +1/+1 counters and death triggers. Thanks to its Rapid Regeneration ability, The Swarmlord enters the battlefield with two +1/+1 counters for each time you’ve cast your commander from the command zone. The more times it’s died, the stronger it gets.

Then, whenever a creature you control with counter on it dies, you get to draw a card. Cards like Hardened Scales shine with The Swarmlord, as well as cards that place counters on your creatures passively, like Arwen, Weaver of Hope and Renata, Called to the Hunt. While you don’t want to be recasting your commander a bunch in a game, it coming back stronger each time can be a punishing reward for your hard work.

Most notably, Maelstrom Wanderer, has two instances of cascade, meaning that upon entering the battlefield, its controller triggers cascade twice, casting two additional spells for free. Joining forces to stop the Phyrexian invasion, Rashmi and Ragavan come together to provide tons of card advantage for you in your games. The first spell you cast on your turn lets you exile the top card of an opponent’s library and gives you a Treasure token. You can then cast the card you just exiled for free if its mana value is less than the number of artifacts you control. If It’s more, you have to pay to cast it.

Spamming the board with tons of mana rocks and Treasure tokens is a great way to go, ensuring you can always cast your opponent’s spells for free, and if you can’t, you’ll have plenty of mana available to do whatever you want. Cards like Dockside Extortionist and Academy Manufactor are your best friends in this deck, creating tons of tokens for you to take advantage of.

Magus Lucea Kane is a commander you can let sit for a bit while you build up your board since it adds a +1/+1 counter to any creature of your choice at the start of your combat. With a few extra combat steps in a turn, you can start dishing out a fair number of counters with Kane.

The real power of Magus Lucea Kane comes from her second ability, Psychic Stimulus. This ability gives you two generic mana to use for anything you want, but if you use it for a spell with X in its mana value or to activate an ability with X in its cost, you copy that spell or ability. You even get to copy creature spells that have X in their mana value, giving you two creatures for one cast.

Drawing cards is the hallmark of Temur, giving you access to some of the best cards possible for keeping your hand full. Drawing some inspiration from the red aspect of the color combination is Loot, the Key to Everything. This little cutie doesn’t draw cards necessarily, but instead gives you access to the top cards of your deck by exiling them for the turn and letting you play them.

This ability triggers at the start of your turn, and checks the number of card types among permanents you control. You’ll have at least two cards getting exiled if you have lands and Loot out, and can get up to six cards each turn if you have all these permanent types in play.

Kalamax, The Stormsire

A 4/4 for four mana, Kalamax is a widely popular Temur commander that allows its controller to copy the first instant or sorcery they cast each turn. While this ability only triggers once each turn unlike that of Riku, it requires no investment of mana, allowing it to be used more reliably.

Kalamax has to be tapped to copy spells, but attacking might not always be an option. Consider running a few vehicles or cards that let you tap creatures for extra effects to get Kalamax into position.

Additionally, whenever Kalamax’s controller copies a spell, a +1/+1 counter is put on Kalamax, allowing it to function as an offensive threat in addition to as a source of spell-based value.

Dragon-themed Commander decks have a new powerhouse in the format in Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm. If you want an absolute powerhouse in the command zone, look no further than the X-Man goddess herself and build a deck around Storm, Force of Nature. This four-mana commander has both flying and vigilance, giving you a bit of evasion for when you go swinging in. The game changing power comes from her Ceaseless Tempest power ability, giving you an elegant way to put your spells to good use.

When Storm deals combat damage to another player, the next instant or sorcery spell gains storm, which lets you copy it for each spell you’ve cast before it this turn. Sure, she has to make contact with an opponent to get there, but she has flying already, and it won’t be too difficult to push some damage given the amount of removal and tempo spells you can run.

Animar, Soul of Elements is by and large one of the most powerful creature-focused commanders in the entire format. A 1/1 elemental with protection from white and black for three mana, Animar can grow in size quite quickly, gaining a +1/+1 counter whenever its controller casts a creature spell.

While a large commander with protection from two colors is nothing to scoff at, Animar’s strongest ability comes in the form of its cost reduction ability, reducing the mana costs of all creature spells its owner would cast by an amount of mana equal to the number of +1/+1 counters on it. This means that, the more creatures you cast, the cheaper they will be, meaning that Animar can allow you to cast some of the largest and most devastating creatures in Magic’s history for a negligible cost.
