Mecha BREAK is an upcoming mech combat game that had a hugely successful early access beta that brought the game up to number five on Steam’s most-wishlisted titles.
A unique new IP, Mecha BREAK has clearly drawn inspiration from some of the popular games and series in the subgenre – and you could make an educated guess as to which title had the most influence on the game.
Esports.net spoke with Mecha BREAK developer Amazing Seasun Games’ CEO and lead producer, Kris Kwok, who gave an perhaps obvious answer to the game’s biggest inspirations.

Mecha BREAK Lead Producer Talks About The Game’s Influences and Inspiration
Talking to Esports.net earlier this month during the Mecha BREAK Pre-Launch Invitational , lead producer Kris Kwok explained the influences and reasoning behind making a mecha game:
“I dreamed when I was young and I used to watch movies and television that one day I could ride a mecha. It’s why I chose this industry – so I can make my dream come true. To pilot a mecha and because I has joined the game industry I definitely want to achieve that dream through my games. It’s the same as, maybe a kid loves racing cars, wants to play a racing game, or if their dream is piloting a plane and a game can make that dream come true.”

When asked what Kris’ favorite mecha series are (perhaps a unnecessary question, given this interview took place in a room filled with Gundam models, also known as Gunpla), he told us “Gundam is definitely my favorite.”
“From a very young age I watched the Mobile Suit Gundam animated series, but I definitely realized that mecha is not just for kids – it’s also for adults because in this mecha-based universe you can see how culture and politics revolve around mecha.
But here [in reality], mecha is only seen as a war machine so it really brought me enlightenment that mecha has a deeper meaning behind them in a mecha-based world.”
Mobile Suit Gundam, originally released in 1979, has become one of Japan’s biggest media franchises, and a huge influence on the Mecha genre as a whole. With over 50 TV series, films, original video animations, manga, novels, and video games, the Gundam series is a cultural juggernaut, although has had lesser commercial success abroad.
Despite being an animated franchise aimed at kids, the Mobile Suit Gundam series frequently broach serious topics, such as child soldiers, the human cost of war, the merits and pitfalls of pacifism, and even whether humanity can evolve as a species by traveling into space – Heavy stuff indeed.

Kris worked within parent company, Kingsoft, for several years before becoming the CEO of Amazing Seasun Games. Five years ago, after successes with titles like Snowbreak: Containment Zone, a mobile RPG shooter, and JX3 Online, a Wuxia MMORPG, production on Mecha BREAK, at the time called Code BREAK, began.
