You Might Be Able To Pick Up One Of MTG's Expensive, But Brilliant Commander Staples As It Gets Surprise Reprint In Tarkir: Dragonstorm

Summary

  • Craterhoof Behemoth, a popular Commander card, gets its first Standard-legal print in over a decade through Tarkir: Dragonstorm.
  • The reprint may lower the card’s secondary market price, making it more affordable for players.
  • If you Craterhoof me, I will eat your card.

One of the most popular cards in Magic: The Gathering’s Commander format is getting its first Standard-legal reprint in over a decade.

Craterhoof Behemoth, affectionately known simply as ‘Hoof’, will be getting a reprint as part of Tarkir: Dragonstorm, giving you the best chance in years to snag a copy for your deck.

The Hoof Is In Standard

Revealed as part of the Tarkir: Dragonstorm debut, which kicks off ten days of previews for the set, the most shocking thing is that Craterhoof Behemoth is just part of the main set. It isn’t in the Commander product, it isn’t a special guest, it isn’t on a bonus sheet; the Hoof is just in regular booster packs of a Standard-legal set, straight up.

If you’ve not had the pleasure of encountering a Craterhoof Behemoth, you either don’t play Commander, or haven’t played Standard since its original printing in 2012’s Avacyn Restored. Craterhoof Behemoth costs a whopping eight mana, but its effect might as well read “win the game”.

When Craterhoof Behemoth enters, every creature gets trample and +X/+X, equal to the number of creatures you control. Go wide with tokens, or cheat out a lot of other big creatures, and Craterhoof is often one of the best game-enders in Commander. Unless you have a fog effect or enough blockers, you’re likely going to die when it drops.

With this reprint, Craterhoof is also entering Pioneer, where it can likely do even more damage.

Though the Hoof is an all-timer of a card, it weirdly won’t be the only card with its effect in Standard. 2023’s Wilds of Eldraine gave us Moonshaker Cavalry, a card that was described at the time as a ‘white Craterhoof’ for giving the same +X/+X buff, but flying instead of trample.

Reprints into Standard often drop the secondary market price of cards, meaning if you’re a singles buyer you’ll likely be able to pick up a Craterhoof of your own for significantly cheaper. We’ve seen this before, with Doubling Season dropping as a result of its Wilds of Eldraine reprint, and Cavern of Souls dropping after The Lost Caverns of Ixalan. Before the reveal it was coming to Tarkir, Craterhoof Behemoth was sitting at around $30.

The last reprint we saw of Hoof was back in Commander Masters, an unpopular premiere set that was criticised for the high cost of its packs. Tarkir is highly anticipated as a return to a popular setting, meaning we could see a stampede of Behemoths hit the market a few weeks after launch.

This is one of the most noteworthy reprints we’ve seen in a Standard-legal set in quite a while, with Craterhoof not just being a Commander all-star, but also playable in formats like Legacy as a win condition for go-wide green decks.

Tarkir: Dragonstorm, and your fresh chance to get a Craterhoof Behemoth, launches on April 11.
