Ahead of the highly anticipated release of The Last of Us Season 2 in only a couple of weeks, it has been revealed that a horrific infected type from the games will be seen when the series returns. HBO’s adaptation of the Naughty Dog video game series has pretty much stayed within the borders of its source material throughout season one, but it seems as though The Last of Us Season 2 aims to delve into its infected types in a much bigger way, especially since there was some criticism regarding the lack of infected variations seen throughout the show’s first run.
In The Last of Us Season 2’s most recent trailer, fans of the show saw that airborne spores will now play a part in transmitting the feared Cordyceps brain infection, which will shake things up a lot for the show’s characters, as not only will they want to avoid getting bitten, but will also go to great lengths to avoid breathing in the particles produced from those infected. Throughout the first season, tendrils were introduced to spread the virus, which was different from The Last of Us game, so those who have missed that aspect of the franchise will finally see how the beloved characters deal with their circumstances now that the virus is even more deadly. But that’s not the only thing Joel, Ellie, and Co. will need to look out for, as there’s another terrifying factor on the cards in Season 2.

The Last of Us’ Stalkers Will Be Making a Big Impact on Season 2
Talking to Empire, Pedro Pascal, who plays Joel in the series, explained that The Last of Us season 2 will turn up the heat on the post-apocalyptic show when it returns in April and that many fans of the series won’t be ready for what’s about to happen. “It’s definitely a bigger, far more ambitious, and risk-taking season,” Pascal said. “And, if it can even be imagined, further tests our strength against a world we’re already afraid to be in.” Showrunner Craig Mazin also said that Season 2 will see more Cordyceps-infected types, including the terrifyingly creepy stalkers who players of the video game will shutter at the mention of. “All I’ll say is that for the people who want to see more of the infected… Buckle up!”, Mazin promised.
For those who haven’t played The Last of Us or The Last of Us Part 2 games, Stalkers are a fairly rare form of infected type, but when they are experienced, it’s something most certainly don’t forget. Usually found creeping around their environment in the hope of remaining as quiet as possible as they hunt their prey (hence the name Stalkers), these infected represent the second stage of infection, occurring between two weeks and one year after exposure to the virus. Not only can they see, unlike the Clickers, Stalkers are very aggressive from the get-go and are prone to jump on their victims from the most unexpected of places.
Season 2 of The Last of Us is really shaping up to make an explosive return. Not only will the series welcome new cast members like Kaitlyn Dever as Abby and Isabela Merced as Dina, but fans will also see an expanded storyline for Eugene (Joe Pantoliano), who was only mentioned in the sequel. Also starring Bella Ramsey as Ellie and Young Mazino as Jesse, The Last of Us season two will premiere on April 13 on HBO Max.
