Porky Is Ready For A Break

There thankfully aren’t a lot of references in the movie that will date it, unlike a reference-heavy movie like Shrek. One of the best modern jokes is in the opening montage that shows Daffy and Porky growing up and being measured periodically by Farmer Jim.

At one point, Daffy and Porky are dressed like punks from the 90s, which is when Porky says this line. Kids don’t quite look like this nowadays in their teens, but it’s an image everyone can relate to when signaling a personality change. Thankfully, the movie doesn’t linger on it for too long either.

“Fired!”

Various Businesses Can’t Handle Daffy As An Employee

One of the best callbacks in the movie frames itself in a 4:3 ratio, mimicking old tube TV screens. It’s when the two leads start looking for jobs and this montage goes through Daffy and Porky going through several and failing spectacularly.

Daffy turns their paper route into an on-rails shooter. He thinks the lady ordering coffee is behind some conspiracy involving specific orders. The list goes on, and every time they fail, a big stamp appears that screams “Fired!” before moving on to the next gag. This bit ends with Porky saying his famous, “That’s all folks” line, which is the perfect cherry on top.

Daffy Tries Some Experimental Gum

Down on their luck, Daffy and Porky regroup in a local diner where they are treated to milkshakes. As they are dining, Petunia walks in and mesmerizes Porky with her beauty. Daffy invites her over to join their conversation and Petunia explains that she works at the gum factory.

She gives Daffy an experimental flavor and, at first, it seems fine, but as he starts to say this line about the taste, his head explodes. It’s a classic Daffy gag, and is unexpected since it is supposed to just be gum.

“You Push The Button And I… Smash The Lever!”

Daffy Misunderstands His Job

Exploding gum aside, Petunia agrees to get Daffy and Porky jobs at the factory where she works. Their job is simple: Porky has to push a button and then Daffy has to pull a lever. Seemingly understanding, Daffy sees Porky pushing his button and then he excitedly whips out a hammer thinking he is supposed to smash the lever instead of pulling it.

Thankfully, this episode doesn’t get the pair fired quite yet. They turn this button/lever practice into a little musical montage which is another classic throwback to old Looney Tunes shorts, putting “Powerhouse” by The Raymond Scott Quintette to good use in 2025.

Fans of animation are always looking out for sign gags, from The Simpsons to Looney Tunes shorts. The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie has some great ones, and more will assuredly be uncovered once the movie releases on VOD.

Keen-eyed viewers should be able to spot the “Gum and Pets” sign during the delivery sequence with the new gum. What kind of store, cartoon or otherwise, sells just gum and pets? The inside is never shown, leaving interpretation up to the viewer’s imagination.

Daffy’s Paranoia Kicks In

Shortly after the gum delivery, Daffy goes on a frantic rant because he believes the gum is poisoned in a nearby park. He starts screaming this and that, with one of his best lines saying how the gum is watching everyone. It’s honestly not that far off from sounding like a real conspiracy that some people would believe.

Daffy’s high-strung character makes him perfect for going off the wall like this as a conspiracy junky. The thing is, Daffy is right, and there really are eyeballs in the gum watching people.

Petunia Is Boundlessly Curious

The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie, surprisingly, has a lot of great action scenes, like when the alien combines with the fake teeth for the first time in Petunia’s lab. To fight it off, Petunia gets a Bunsen burner and transforms it into a flamethrower in a scene that is just as chaotic as the flamethrower scene in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.

After going through all that and learning that the gum is a parasite, the end of this scene sees Petunia about to eat the gum anyway, wondering what it tastes like. She’s not a ditzy character, but Petunia is a creator yearning to create the perfect food profile for her new gum flavor in the pursuit of science.

Bryan Adams Gets Some Time In The Looney Tunes Spotlight

Bryan Adams’ “(Everything I Do) I Do It for You” was made famous in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, and while the love ballad is killer, it’s also kind of a joke when used in the right context. For example, in The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie, Porky starts to have a flashback about Daffy and himself growing up with Farmer Jim.

The funny thing is that the song is meant to be a love song, and in this context, it is weird Porky would be thinking about his family in this way. It may not hit with the kids, but the adults in the room will certainly light up with this dated but still funny reference.
