Should You Kill or Spare Captain Aelfyr in Avowed?

Avowed - Captain Aelfyr Guard

Something important to note is that you encounter Captain Aelfyr not once, but twice in Avowed. The first encounter happens in Emerald Stair, the second region you explore in your quest to stop the devastating plague known as the Dreamscourge.

Captain Aelfyr can be found guarding the Shatterscarp Gatehouse in the north along with several of her Steel Garrotes. If you speak with her as part of the main quest, A Path to the Garden, you will ask her permission to pass through the Gatehouse to enter Shatterscarp. During this conversation, you will have an option to either attack and kill Captain Aelfyr in Avowed, or play it cool and enter Shatterscarp without shedding any more Steel Garrote blood.

The thing is that if you decide to spare Captain Aelfyr in Emerald Stair, she will confront you again in Galawain’s Tusks, the fourth region you explore in Avowed. However, this second encounter will be an unavoidable boss fight. Captain Aelfyr will be infected with the Dreamscourge, leaving you with no choice but to kill her in order to move forward during the main quest, Our Dreams Divide Us Still.

Considering that you eventually have to fight Captain Aelfyr during the main storyline, you should definitely attack her in your first encounter in Emerald Stair.

Killing Captain Aelfyr will give you some much-needed experience points and loot to level up, and most importantly, reward you with the Death Knight Gloves in Avowed. This pair of unique gauntlets increases your frost damage by a significant 15 percent and reduces your stamina cost while blocking by 10 percent, giving you an impressive balance of offense and defense.

Both the Death Knight Armor and Boots can be found in a hidden waterfall cave in Emerald Stair, so killing Captain Aelfyr allows you to complete your Death Knight set in the same region.

However, be warned that you will not be facing just Captain Aelfyr. You will also have to deal with several of her Steel Garrotes. If you are struggling to find/upgrade weapons, or are playing on Path of the Damned difficulty, you might find the fight a bit challenging.

Do not attack Captain Aelfyr if you want to unlock the evil ending and the Tyranny achievement in Avowed. Both require you to side with the Steel Garrote at every possible opportunity. Sure, you will still have to fight her in the second encounter, but that is due to the Dreamscourge.
