Oda has even mentioned how powerful he thinks Akainu is by saying he would find the One Piece in a year.
Akainu’s Power in One Piece
Oda Says He Would Find the One Piece in a Year
Akainu is quite a powerful character in One Piece. Also known by his real name, Sakazuki, Akainu is a force to be reckoned with, and one of the most powerful people among the Marines. He used to hold the position of Admiral before the timeskip, before he was promoted to Fleet Admiral after defeating Aokiji. Fleet Admiral is the highest position one can reach in the Marines, so that is, by itself, a showcase of his power.
Akainu is not someone to be messed with. His power and cold nature make him quite a formidable enemy for even the Four Emperors. This character has definitely affected the entire course of the story, especially during the Paramount War, where he succeeded in killing Portgas D. Ace.
He is so powerful that Eiichiro Oda, the mangaka of the One Piece series, believed that if Akainu was the protagonist, he would find the One Piece in a year. This is definitely quite shocking, as it has taken Luffy over 2 years and he still isn’t there yet. Meanwhile, others have been trying to claim the One Piece for decades.
Here’s what Oda said exactly convening Akainu:
“When creating a protagonist, it’s important not to make him too strong. If Akainu became the protagonist, he would be too strong and the series would end within a year. Akainu is the most handsome guy in the world. I’ll take good care of him.” — Eiichiro Oda
What Makes Akainu So Powerful?
While it is true that Oda stated he’d find it quickly, what he means truly must be understood as well. Akainu, as he is, is extremely overpowered, with a Devil Fruit known to canonically have the offensive output of the highest order.
Akainu, a high-ranking Marine, definitely has some incredible Haki at his disposal as well. He is a confirmed user of Armament and Observation Haki, and it’s not impossible for him to have Conqueror’s Haki, but that’s to be seen in the future.
For someone like him to be the protagonist would mean that he’d already be strong enough to challenge the Yonko and claim the One Piece. But, this most definitely shouldn’t be interpreted as Akainu being the absolute strongest. In fact, he isn’t even the strongest right now, in his prime. It just means that Oda doesn’t necessarily like overpowered protagonists because they would overcome obstacles easily.
