Kraken Kitty V2 BT Kuromi Edition Review

When Razer first unveiled the Kraken Kitty V2 BT gaming headset in celebration of International Cat Day 2023, everyone immediately began envisioning a Hello Kitty version. Sure enough, in 2024 Razer released a Hello Kitty version of the popular headset.

Now, after months of expanding its Sanrio collaborative line, the Razer Kraken Kitty V2 BT headset is back, this time with a dark, yet vibrant Kuromi-themed aesthetic. Slightly cheaper than the Hello Kitty version, the Kuromi edition is still an extra $30 compared to the standard Kraken Kitty V2 BT.

I’ve reviewed the rest of the Kuromi collection from Razer, with mixed results. Does the Kraken Kitty V2 BT Kuromi Edition stand as another win for the two brands, or is style the only thing going for it? I tested this Kuromi edition gaming headset on Fortnite, Discord, and various other apps to find out exactly what it’s worth.

The headset’s packaging is minimal, with the silicone “ears” pre-attached. That means there’s just the headset, its charging cord, and the manual to be found in the box.

Design & Comfort

All About the Details

As with the other Kuromi edition Razer accessories that have been released, this Kraken Kitty looks amazing. Mirrored on both sides of the headset is Kuromi’s name and Kuromi herself winking from a sassy pose. Around her are cute solid and hollow stars, all done in a pretty lavender color.

That same lavender color paints the soft and plush foam padding that covers the center of the headband, plus the two earcups. Hidden within the earcups are even more Kuromi motifs and more images of her. It’s the same pattern that can be found on the Kuromi keyboard wrist rest for the Ornata V3 TKL.

How It Feels to Wear

The earcup foam really sinks in while you wear it, helping to make it a bit more comfortable. It is a bit snug width-wise, but that may get better with age, as the headset has a chance of getting slightly stretched with use.

If you have a slightly smaller-than-average head, or are considering this headset for a child or teen, there probably won’t be any issues at all. This is especially true since the headset includes an adjustable height headband, which does allow for some size adjustment.

Both the earcups and the center of the headband have a layer of foam covered by a faux leatherette. The leatherette is very soft and seems resistant to scratches, but likely wouldn’t survive too much abuse.

The earcups include a fabric cover over their “faces”, or the part that touches your ear. This makes them much more breathable than many other headsets, while not sacrificing the better seal of leatherette to ear.

The Kraken Kitty V2 BT Kuromi Edition weighs less than three-quarters of a pound at just 325g. The leatherette cover makes a big difference on the headband though. It was easy to tilt my head back for drinks and snacks while gaming. The Kraken Kitty V2 never slipped off, barely moving at all.

The Star of the Show

By far the most eye-catching feature of the Kuromi wireless headset are the two jester hat points that mimic Kuromi’s ears. The velvety silicone used for the pointy ears is extremely soft, but don’t be fooled: they are surprisingly sturdy.

Most of the ears are solid and stiff, completely immovable. The tips are where the ears take on a rubbery quality, which raises a few concerns about the lifespan. However, despite being much taller than any of the other Kraken Kitty ears, none of the weight of the headset is put on them when you put down the headset. That certainly adds to the durability of the cute silicone toppers.

The ears are such a high-quality addition and look super cool, so much so that the headset would be ideal for a cosplay-inspired outfit. Anyone who knows Kuromi will recognize those ears immediately, but they do stand out with their height, which is something to keep in mind before wearing them out.

At the same time, they look really cool and cute! Wearing them can bring you the joy and confidence of sassy ladies like Kuromi!

Connectivity & Software

Getting Connected

Turning on the Kuromi Kraken Kitty V2 BT, I found that the headset arrived almost fully charged, which was a pleasant surprise. Even better, when connecting to my phone and PC, the headset was found almost instantly and had the correct corresponding name.

Connecting the headset was effortless, though it is unusual that you can’t connect using the charging cord. That does save some costs though, as the charging cord is a simple, albeit short, USB-C.

The battery is advertised as lasting up to 40 hours, and I found that to be accurate in my case. That means you don’t necessarily need to rely on the charging cord that much, which makes up for the short length.

Customization Through the App

Razer’s Chroma app is usually the place to change the colors of any RGB on Razer accessories. However, for the Kitty V2, you can customize the look of the headset just by going to the standard audio app.

Once there, you can choose between different preset equalizer modes, enter a low-latency game mode before joining a match, and change the color of the RGB lighting found on each earcup.

The slight light is bright and pretty, though subtle, with a circle surrounding a small Razer logo. Changing the colors and even the pattern is easy, as with any Razer product. You can adjust the headset’s settings from your phone or PC using the app.

Performance Quality

The Listening Experience

The thick earcups and slightly snug fit work double duty with the Kraken Kitty V2 BT. They’re not only comfortable, they also provide decent passive noise cancellation. Once any audio is playing, even quiet background music, it’s difficult to hear normal-volume activities going on around you.

This passive noise cancellation in turn makes audio sound a lot clearer and crisper than you’d think. Although the default audio settings are just okay, once you choose the right EQ settings for your chosen activity, the sound quality really jumps up.

Bass hits deep, shooting doesn’t sound tinny, and dialogue comes through clean with Kuromi’s Kitty V2. The audio you receive from games, movies, and music always comes through crystal clear.

The Speaking Experience

Not having a wireless dongle connection available, or at least a wired one, impacts the mic’s overall performance. In games that use the mic, such as Fortnite, once you get connected, the audio quality takes a dip.

The Bluetooth isn’t strong enough on its own to support chat and game audio. The low-latency mode helps a bit, but the mic still struggles to deliver an accurate voice through the void.

The mic is good enough for a friendly chat while gaming, but for fast-paced competitive games, it can lag.

Overall Impression

While the 40mm drivers are decent and offer significant passive noise cancellation, they could be better with a few minor tweaks. In addition to that, the mic quality remains as we’ve seen in previous iterations of the this headset.

That being said, the Kraken Kitty V2 BT Kuromi Edition looks amazing. It is cute, cool, and makes no apologies for its big ears and pretty lavender finish. It looks awesome for cosplay and would probably be fantastic for listening to music at a convention or a similar event, even if they are a bit more than eye-catching in normal public settings.

Kuromi mega-fans who enjoy more relaxed gaming or incognito cosplay don’t stand to lose much by picking up this new headset. Mobile gamers are especially perfect candidates for this uniquely stylish headset.
