Civilization 7‘s first DLC, Crossroads of the World, adds Great Britain to the list of available Civilizations in the Modern Age. This Economic/Expansionist Civilization specializes in naval units, economic strategies, and cultural strategies.
By making use of Antiquarians, a unique explorer unit available to Great Britain in Civilization 7, players can generate bonus culture by retrieving artifacts far from their capital. Great Britain’s unique naval unit, Revenge, deals splash damage and is excellent at overwhelming opposing naval units, and their unique buildings help them to pursue an economic strategy and grow their settlements through boosts to gold and production.

Ada Lovelace, Enchantress of Number, is a new leader available in Civilization 7’s Crossroads of the World DLC, so here’s how she works.
Great Britain Civ Overview
Great Britain is an Economic/Expansionist Civilization with a particular focus on naval units, gold generation, and Culture. They get a unique Explorer unit called an “Antiquarian,” which generates culture based on its distance from your capital when excavating artifacts, encouraging them to send Explorers far afield in search of artifacts to display. Their unique naval unit “Revenge” can deal damage to adjacent units when attacking via the “splash” keyword. Meanwhile, their unique buildings and quarter are focused on enhancing gold and production, boosting gold per connected settlement.
Great Britain Abilities, Units, Buildings, Civics, & More
Great Britain’s Unique Buildings aid in gold and production, allowing them to easily leverage “Workshop of the World” to expand and upgrade their cities and especially their capital. Antiquarians will help them to progress toward a Cultural Victory while also accelerating their Civic research. Revenge is a powerful Navy unit that can do damage to several units at once, making for an excellent Naval option, or invasion deterrent if your enemy plans on attacking by sea.

How To Unlock Great Britain Civ
All Great Britain Civ Unlock Requirements
Great Britain is one of the easier Civilizations to unlock since anyone can access it as long as they have two Fleet Commanders during the Age of Exploration. Players using Ada Lovelace as their leader, or who chose the Normans as their Age of Exploration Civilization, will automatically have access to Great Britain when entering the Modern Age.
Best Great Britain Victory Condition/Legacy Path: Geographic Society
Great Britain’s unique Explorer Unit makes them especially well-suited to the Cultural Legacy Path: Geographic Society. They also perform well at the Economic Legacy Path: Railroad Tycoon, due to their excellent gold and production boosts from traditions and their unique buildings. This guide will focus on the former, though both are excellent choices when playing as Great Britain.
Civ 7 Great Britain General Strategy
Great Britain’s main goal will be to complete the Geographic Society Legacy Path by displaying 15 artifacts. This means museums and antiquarians are their top priority. Sending Antiquarians far afield will allow you to get more out of their culture bonus when digging up artifacts. Still, you’ll have to move fast to outpace other civilizations following this path.
Great Britain Starting Tips
When starting, you’ll want to unlock the Natural History Civic as soon as possible, allowing you to construct museums and, once you’ve done so, produce Antiquarians to retrieve artifacts. While you’re completing that Civic, you should research the Steam Engine to re-unlock Merchants and start establishing Trade Routes with other Civilizations again. Build Grocers and Schoolhouses wherever possible to boost food and science, helping you to expedite research and grow your settlements. (Grocers are a type of Warehouse Building, increasing yields on Fishing Boats, Plantations, Camps, Farms, and Pastures.)
Your next Civic Priorities should be: Social Question, Political Theory, Pax Britannica, and Pax Britannica II/Mastery. Social Question provides access to policies that improve Science and Culture from specialists, Political Theory gets you access to Free Speech (+100% Food and Happiness toward maintaining Specialists) so you can utilize specialists more freely, and getting both Pax Britannica and its mastery will allow you to build Great Britain’s unique buildings and quarter.
You’ll want to research Urbanization and Electricity next, so you can build Opera Houses and Stock Markets to further boost your Culture and Gold per turn. Once your Antiquarians are ready, have them research at the museum (revealing artifact locations on the continent) and then send them out to gather artifacts for your civilization so you can display them in your Museums and progress the Legacy Path.
As you progress further into the Modern Age, you’ll want to research industrialization so you can set up train stations. Antiquarians can use railways to move around the map faster, making this a vital step in improving their efficiency, especially if you have towns spread far and wide to facilitate railways. Mass Production will help boost food and production with the Cannery and Factory buildings.
Once you’ve got enough artifacts displayed, you’ll unlock the World’s Fair Wonder which will win you the game when completed, and you’ll receive +10% production toward it for every Culture Legacy Point you’ve earned throughout the game.
If you reach the end of the main Civic Tree in the Modern Age, you can repeatedly research “Future Civic” to generate more artifacts, which is handy if you’re struggling to reach the amount you need.
Best Leaders For Great Britain:
Four leaders who pair particularly well with Great Britain are Augustus, Amina, Catherine the Great, and Ada Lovelace.
Augustus receives production boosts in the capital for every town, and can purchase culture buildings in towns, allowing him to take advantage of Britain’s expansionist playstyle to accelerate construction and unit production in the capital. This also means he can make the most of “Workshop of the World” to upgrade his towns and cities, without needing to worry about the increased cost of turning towns into cities as often as other leaders might.
Amina is a fantastic choice for economic strategies, generating extra gold per resource slotted in cities and gaining an extra resource slot in all cities. Catherine the Great performs well in Cultural strategies thanks to the extra Culture from Great Works displayed and the extra Great Work slots in all buildings that have Great Work slots.
Ada Lovelace, added in the same DLC as Great Britain, receives boosts to science when researching Civic Masteries and boosts to culture when researching Tech Masteries, allowing her to quickly build up steam and unlock essential tech and civics for any strategy.
