Yet, fishing has been a staple of the series for a while, and its systems are even more fleshed out in Monster Hunter Wilds. There are side quests and valuable materials associated with fishing in the game, so it’s something that every Wilds player should check out. For players who are new to the fishing system, it starts out relatively simple. Speak to Kanya in the Scarlet Forest Encampment, and she’ll give players their first rod and their first fishing quest. Players just have to cast a line, attract a fish, and hit the button when it bites. The system expands with different baits and introduces more mechanics to the catching as players are asked to catch bigger fish.

Players will find many spots to fish at in the game’s different areas. Anyone approaching fishing should be aware that the time of day, the season, and the bait used can be as important as the actual spot they fish at. Kanya’s Fishing Spot – Scarlet Forest Base Camp

A Convenient Starter Spot

• Location: Scarlet Forest Area 1 (next to Kanya)
• Catchable Fish: Bomb Arowana, Burst Arowana, Goldenfry, Sushifish, Virid Bowfin

Conveniently, the first fishing spot that players will find in Monster Hunter Wilds is right next to the NPC who gives them their first fishing side quest. Kanya can be found fishing in a small pool in the Scarlet Forest base camp, and players just need to talk to her to get started with fishing.

The first quest she gives can be completed in the pool that’s right there. Players should be able to do their next quest for the Goldenfish right after. That said, to continue the fishing side quests, players will have to keep progressing the story.

Hidden Cave – Scarlet Forest Area 12

An Underground Cave Fishing

• Location: Scarlet Forest (accessed by swimming underwater near Area 8 camp)
• Catchable Fish: Platinumfish, Speartuna, Gravid Bowfin, Gastronome Tuna, Goldenfish

This somewhat hidden fishing spot is one of the best places to snag the Goldenfish for the second fishing quest. It’s considered a part of Area 12, but this is accessed by swimming underwater from next to the river fishing spot in Area 8.

This cave fishing spot is usually full of Goldenfish, as well as some other valuable aquatic life, making it a pretty reliable source of fish for Monster Hunter Wilds players looking to acquire large quantities.

River – Scarlet Forest Area 8

Open Air River Fishing

• Location: Scarlet Forest (next to area 8 camp)
• Catchable Fish: Whetfish, Starduster, Grand Escunite, Escunite, Goldenfish

In the Eastern pop-up camp in Scarlet Forest Area 8, there is a river fishing spot right next to the camp. As there’s cover here, it’s also technically considered an underground fishing spot, which makes a difference to the fish that can spawn.

This location is also used to access the cave fishing spot in Area 12 by swimming into the cave under the water. Given the variety of fish available here, it’s easy to see why it’s among the best fishing spots in Monster Hunter Wilds.

Oasis – Windward Plains Area 13

A Natural Oasis Fishing Spot

• Location: Windward Plains Area 13 (southwest central area)
• Catchable Fish: Gravid Bowfin, Sushifish, Virid Bowfin, Whetfish

The Windward Plains Oasis is notable as the only water source in the arid southwestern part of the map, above ground at least. There aren’t too many rare fish here, but it’s still a nice outdoor fishing spot.

In this Monster Hunter Wilds fishing spot, players can get the Gravid Bowfin, one of the fishing quest objectives, and the Whetfish, which has scales that can be used as sharpening stones.

Underground Pond – Windward Plains Area 14

A Secluded Fishing Spot

• Location: Windward Plains (accessed by going underground from Area 13)
• Catchable Fish: Platinumfish, Goldenfish, Virid Bowfin

The underground fishing spot in the Windward Plains is right below the above-ground fishing location, accessed through the nearby tunnels. Players can catch most of the fish from the above-ground location here, as well as a couple of types that don’t spawn above, like the Platinumfish.

Catching these particular fish can be important for those who want to complete Monster Hunter Wilds‘ aquatic life compendium, making this fishing spot a pretty useful one.

Great Lake – Scarlet Forest Area 17

• Catchable Fish: Goliath Squid, Great Trevally, Gajau, Gatronome Tuna, Speartuna

The large lake in Scarlet Forest Area 17 is one of the best spots to fish in all of Monster Hunter Wilds. The large body of water has a lot of life, and many of the larger varieties of fish (whoppers) can also be caught there.

This is important for the latter fishing quests, and it’s one of the best places to catch the final fishing quest target, the Goliath Squid, making it a must for avid Monster Hunter Wilds fishers.

River – Oilwell Basin Area 16

• Catchable Fish: Blink Angler, Gravid Bowfin, Burst Arowana, Bomb Arowana

The later fishing spots in Oilwell Basin are really only useful for Monster Hunter Wilds players who are looking to complete their compendium of aquatic life, but there are a couple of fish here that are unique to the region, like the Blink Angler.

The fishing spot at the top of the large central body of water is one of the easiest to access in the area, making it a great place to check out for those hoping to catch everything the game has to offer.

Hidden Cave – Ruins Of Wyveria Area 13

A Hidden Fishing Nook

• Location: Ruins of Wyveria (hidden cave in the south)
• Catchable Fish: Blind Perch, Glass Parexus, Gunpowderfish, Goldenfry

This secluded fishing spot is in a small hidden cave in the southern part of the Ruins of Wyveria map. It’s a nice safe spot where players won’t be bothered, and there are a couple of Wyverian fish that completionists will want to catch here, like the Glass Parexus.

It’s also a good spot to catch Gunpowderfish, which can be difficult to find elsewhere. For these reasons, this is arguably the best fishing spot in all of Monster Hunter Wilds.
