While the main appeal of Monster Hunter Wilds is centered around creatures that are deadly and large, smaller creatures will also be discovered throughout a hunter’s journey. They may not pose a threat and warrant a hunt, but they add to the world around you in varying ways.
Endemic life can reveal more about a certain locale, much like real aspects of nature. Not every creature can be found in every environment or will interact with certain aspects of nature. Some can even be elusive, much like the rare Downy Crake bird.

Where You Can Find a Downy Crake
A Downy Crake is a small, endemic creature that can be rather difficult to find in Monster Hunter Wilds. It is among one of the rarer forms of endemic life to come across in the wild if it is not deliberately searched for. To start, it can only be found in the Iceshard Cliffs while exploring or while on any quest. These birds will be found hitching a ride on the backs of other small creatures native to this area.
Certain zones had higher densities of these smaller creatures, making the chances of finding a Downy Crake higher. Those zones were:
- Zone 9
- Zone 10
- Zone 12
- Zone 13
- Zone 17
A pop-up camp location can be found branching off of zone 12, making it a particularly good spot for fast travel, and can serve as a starting point for the best farming route.
A core feature of Monster Hunter Wilds is how the environment is influenced by certain natural events. These events are labeled, but more importantly, can be influenced when a player takes a rest. From any camp, you can select the rest option that will then allow you to select the time of day and the natural event you want to be present. To find the Downy Crake, The Fallow proved to be the best natural event to find it in. However, the time of day did not matter as much.
Another influence was whether there was a larger monster in the area. Downy Crakes were commonly found when the smaller creatures were away from any larger creatures that could be properly hunted, like Gore Magala, for example. Entering combat with these small creatures that they would ride on will also cause them to despawn. Therefore, the Ghille Mantle is integral to successfully capturing a Downy Crake.
To catch a Downy Crake, keep the Ghille Mantle in your inventory so you can equip it when you enter one of the recommended zones. Upon successfully finding one of these birds riding on the backs of another creature, ready your capture net in your inventory. This will allow you to take aim at the bird, which will then bring up this rectangular box that serves as a general crosshair. You will know you are on target to catch it if it is glowing orange while aiming at the Downy Crake.
Once it glows, simply fire the net at the bird and that will result in a successful capture of the Downy Crake. You will also be rewarded with some Hunter Guild Points for successfully finding such a rare endemic life.
