Recent reports have indicated that Ubisoft devised an anti-harassment plan to protect its developers after the release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Harassment is an unfortunate common reality for many developers, but Assassin’s Creed Shadows has attracted fairly negative attention from bigots due to the introduction of the character Yasuke as one of its protagonists, and it seems that Ubisoft is preparing to deal with harassers after the launch.
One of the two protagonists of Assassin’s Creed Shadows is Yasuke, who is based on a real-life figure. The real-world version of Yasuke was an African man who was employed in Oda Nobunaga’s samurai army in 1581. Historical accounts say that Yasuke was brought to Japan as a slave by Jesuit missionaries, and eventually worked for the powerful warlord. However, Yasuke’s description as a samurai in the game didn’t sit well with some people, and many individuals have performed racist attacks against Ubisoft and its employees since then.

Now, PCGamer reported that Ubisoft is preparing to protect its devs from harassment when Assassin’s Creed Shadows comes out on March 20. As seen in one ResetEra post, an unnamed Ubisoft employee said that developers were advised not to post on social media that they work for Ubisoft to avoid harassment. Ubisoft has also been working with Canada’s Communications Security Establishment to discover and prevent targeted attacks against its employees. Additionally, Ubisoft is said to be offering psychological and legal support for employees who suffer from targeted harassment due to their association with the game.
Ubisoft is Bracing for Harassment After Assassin’s Creed Shadows Launches
It’s unfortunate that so many individuals have been attacking developers for making a game that the publisher had to take preventive action against further harassment. Assassin’s Creed Shadows has been criticized multiple times for different reasons so far, but it’s always disheartening to see people turning to attacks instead of real criticism.
After it comes out later this month, Assassin’s Creed Shadows will take around 30 to 40 hours to beat if gamers focus solely on the main story. Gamers who want to explore the world as Yasuke and Naoe, however, can expect the gameplay to last at least 80 hours.
As expected, Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be released with a robust Photo Mode, a fan-favorite feature that will allow gamers to capture and share the best moments of their journey with ease. Reviews of Assassin’s Creed Shadows have not been unveiled yet, so it remains to be seen how popular the next entry in the franchise will be.
