- In Jujutsu Kaisen, ancient sorcerers like Sukuna and Kenjaku are formidable adversaries in the story.
In the world of Jujutsu Kaisen, the history of sorcerers and curse users has been around for a long time. Though they are powerful, sorcerers aren’t invincible, and as evidence, many have fallen in battle. In the modern era, only a select few have the ability to use these powers, but in ancient times, they were quite common, and most users had world-shattering powers. Since the Heian era, a steep decline in curse users has taken a toll on the world for several centuries, reducing those numbers significantly.
With the lack of Jujutsu sorcerers around the world and an increase in cursed activity, the world was set for turmoil soon. That was until balance was shifted with the birth of Satoru Gojo, one of the most powerful Jujutsu sorcerers to ever live. As strong as he may be, there were ancient sorcerers from back in the day that took part in the Culling Game Arc, that could give anyone they face a run for their money.

What are Ancient Sorcerers?
Before The Present Timeline, These Powerful Sorcerers Ruled The World
Ancient Sorcerers are exactly what the name would indicate. Sorcerers from centuries ago who were once the most powerful curse users of the time, some of whom are now spoken about as legends. Others remain a part of the Jujutsu Kaisen world, and have become either the strongest allies or the most dangerous threats to humanity.
In order to preserve their powers and use them for evil, Kenjaku reincarnated many ancient sorcerers into cursed objects, effectively turning them into Reincarnated Sorcerers. Once the cursed object takes possession of a vessel, the sorcerer will once again roam the world. In Sukuna’s case, Itadori has proven that not all vessels are willing to give up their lives without a fight.
What Do You Think You Are Doing With My Body? Give It Back.
Kenjaku himself is an ancient sorcerer that is capable of taking control of the body of any sorcerer. In its current form, Kenjaku is in possession of Geto’s body, a very powerful sorcerer and friend of Gojo. Parasitic ancient sorcerers, such as Kenjaku and Angel, have the ability to possess a body and take control of their powers, using them for any purpose that fulfills their objectives.
Notable Ancient Sorcerers In Jujutsu Kaisen
These Remarkable Sorcerers Were (And Still Are) A Cut Above The Rest
While the Culling Games Arc introduces a number of ancient sorcerers to the already existing roster, not all have the power of some of the strongest in Jujutsu Kaisen‘s past. More so, there are some that still remain in the present, tormenting those that dare attempt to stop them, while threatening acts of pure violence and evil.
- Ryomen Sukuna. Known as the King of Curses, Ryomen Sukuna is by far the strongest sorcerer to ever exist. Thought to be dead, Sukuna was reincarnated into 20 cursed fingers, which were slowly eaten by Yuji Itadori, leading to him becoming Sukuna’s vessel.
- Kenjaku. With the ability to swap bodies with any sorcerer, dead or alive, Kenjaku can manipulate and use the power of the user they inhabit. With Geto’s body, Kenjaku can use Cursed Spirit Manipulation, among many other abilities.
- Uraume. As one of Sukuna’s subordinates, and a sorcerer from the Heian era, Uraume is a feared sorcerer that is not to be messed with. Their ability to manipulate cursed energy and turn it into positive energy is one of many of their dangerous weapons, which also includes their ice abilities.
- Angel. Existing symbiotically inside her vessel, Angel can nullify any ability. Also from the Heian era, Angel possesses the body of Hana Kurisu, but allows them to move freely with the exchange of being able to use her cursed technique, Jacob’s Ladder.
- Hajime Kashimo. Deemed one of the strongest sorcerers 400 years prior to the main story, Hajime Kashimo is an electric-based sorcerer whose body is in a constant stasis of electrification. His cursed technique is almost unavoidable, and can stun and do major damage to anything it touches.
The Role of Ancient Sorcerers in the Story
What To Expect From The Most Powerful Curse Users In History
Kenjaku is a prominent driving force towards the Culling Games Arc. After locking away Gojo, he spreads fear and destruction, and is the reason why Mahito is able to escape death at the hands of Itadori. Following these events, Kenjaku announces a battle royale tournament, pitting 1000 sorcerers and curse users against one another, with the purpose of determining one winner.

The violent tournament is deemed one of the biggest acts of Jujutsu terrorism in history, and leaves Gojo in the uncomfortable position of having to show the world why he is the true Strongest, if he’s freed, of course. Kenjaku and Sukuna aren’t the only ancient sorcerers that appear in the Culling Game, as many others make their return. Their presence alone leads to many intense battles during the Culling Games, and sparks some of the greatest moments in Jujutsu Kaisen.
The highly-anticipated arc has yet to be featured in the anime, but Jujutsu Kaisen fans aren’t too far away from the tournament of death. Itadori and Megumi will take on countless battles with incredibly powerful foes, and Gojo will eventually make his return to take on Sukuna.
