  • With multiple studios creating successors to Disco Elysium, Hopetown stands out for its emphasis on shaping reality with words.

Disco Elysium spiritual successor Hopetown has recently surpassed its Kickstarter goal in a few hours. Developed by the indie studio Longdue, Hopetown has some developers from the Disco Elysium studio ZA/UM, as well as developers of other high-profile titles such as The Witcher 3, and it promises to be an exciting RPG.

Released in 2019, Disco Elysium is widely considered one of the best RPGs of all time and one of the most original takes on the genre. However, the team that developed Disco Elysium was soon involved in quite a few controversies, with important developers being pushed out of the studio. At the moment, Disco Elysium has four different studios trying to develop its spiritual successor, and Hopetown is one of the most high-profile ones.

Disco Elysium Mobile Could Be Bittersweet for Fans

As exciting as it is that Disco Elysium is finally getting an official mobile phone port, its release may leave a bad taste in some fans’ mouths.

Now, developer Longdue has officially started its Kickstarter, which blew past its goal of around $32,338 (£25,000) in only a few hours. At the time of this report, Hopetown had already raised over $44,000 with 725 backers, a remarkable feat for such a short timeframe. In Hopetown, gamers will play as a journalist who will explore the mining city of Hopetown, using their words and different journalistic styles such as Conspiracy, Investigative, Gossip, and Gonzo to describe the story they are writing about and affect the world around them. The game will also revolve around the concept of “psychogeography,” in which the player’s choices will not only affect how people respond to them but also change the world itself. Obviously, it will also be a dialogue-heavy RPG with plenty of choices and chances for roleplay.

Disco Elysium Spiritual Sucessor Hopetown Gains Over $40,000 In a Few Hours Via Kickstarter

Hopetown has names such as the ZA/UM Cultural Movement founder Martin Luiga and Disco Elysium narrator Lenval Brown attached to it and is seen by many as the true successor of the cult classic RPG. However, Longdue is only one of the four studios trying to create a Disco Elysium successor. Dark Math Games is currently working on XXX Nightshift, while Red Info is working on a yet unnamed project.

Last week, ZA/UM announced C4, an espionage RPG, which is described as a “mind-warping story of espionage and team-building in an original yet achingly familiar setting.” While C4 will likely attempt to become a Disco Elysium spiritual successor, it will likely be greatly different from Hopetown, as it seems to focus more on choice and consequence with betrayals and shaky allegiances than on shaping reality with words. With so many games trying to follow Disco Elysium’s path, it remains to be seen which will be the most successful ones.
