- Higgs and Tomorrow’s relationship in Death Stranding 2 mirrors DC’s Joker and Harley Quinn dynamic.
- Death Stranding 2’s pre-order trailer hints at a significant emotional bond between Higgs and Tomorrow.
- The trailer suggests a tragic and possibly romantic narrative for Higgs and Tomorrow in the game.
While Troy Baker’s Higgs is a well-known and beloved character in the Death Stranding universe, Death Stranding 2‘s Tomorrow has been somewhat of a mystery. In fact, until just recently, the involvement of Tomorrow’s Elle Fanning has been a major mystery surrounding the game. Unfortunately, in true Hideo Kojima fashion, Death Stranding 2‘s pre-order trailer didn’t reveal much at all about the role her character will play in the story, but it does appear that her relationship with Higgs will be significant. And considering the antagonistic role Higgs played during the first game, his connection to Tomorrow could spell big things for her.
It’s currently impossible to know what the relationship between Higgs and Tomorrow will look like or what it will produce, but Death Stranding 2‘s pre-order trailer makes the two characters look like a regular DC Comics power couple — Joker and Harley Quinn, specifically. Higgs, with his Joker-esque smile on his title card, and Tomorrow, who initially appears to be an innocent individual corrupted by Higgs, suggests their relationship could head in a similar direction to the famous Batman couple.

Death Stranding 2’s Pre-Order Trailer Implies Higgs and Tomorrow Have a Strong Connection
The recent pre-order trailer doesn’t spend too much time showcasing the relationship between Higgs and Tomorrow, which inadvertently implies their relationship may play a major role in Death Stranding 2‘s narrative. However, the time that the trailer does spend on their relationship makes it almost abundantly clear that they have a strong intimate and emotional bond with one another — at least, eventually.
One scene in the trailer, in particular, shows the two staring longingly into each other’s eyes, their foreheads leaning on the other’s for support. Here, Higgs and Tomorrow both have black tears streaming down their faces, which is ultimately indicative of them both having a strong connection to the Beach. Simply based on what can be seen of their relationship in the trailer, there is a palpable and somewhat disturbing romantic tension between Higgs and Tomorrow, much like the bond Joker shares with Harley Quinn in the DC universe.
The Relationship Dynamics of Higgs and Tomorrow Appear Similar to Those of Joker and Harley Quinn
This is where the comparisons between Higgs and Tomorrow’s apparent relationship and that of Joker and Harley Quinn’s originate, as Tomorrow appears to transform even in Death Stranding 2‘s pre-order trailer in what could very well be similar to Harley Quinn’s transformation. While the relationship between Joker and Harley Quinn is known for its strength and undying nature, the truth is that Harley was actually manipulated by Joker into loving him. Considering Tomorrow looks fairly innocent at some points during the trailer and then evolves into someone who appears to be unknowingly seduced by Higgs, their connection could parallel the bond between Joker and Harley Quinn.
Simply based on what can be seen of their relationship in the trailer, there is a palpable and somewhat disturbing romantic tension between Higgs and Tomorrow, much like the bond Joker shares with Harley Quinn in the DC universe.
At the very least, Higgs’ personal story in Death Stranding 2 seems to be more tragic rather than purely antagonistic, with his facial expressions appearing just as dejected and sorrowful as they are confident and psychotic. Perhaps Tomorrow really does end up falling in love with Higgs in Death Stranding 2, and they are pulled apart by what may be a much greater calling for Tomorrow. The possibilities are endless, but the pre-order trailer for the game gives a strong indication that the relationship dynamics of Higgs and Tomorrow may be very similar to those of Joker and Harley Quinn in the DC universe.
