After much discussion, and one sizable U-turn, Assassin’s Creed Shadows has gained Verification for the Steam Deck, but not without one very major catch. Players won’t be able to change the graphics settings when playing on the handheld, as Ubisoft has locked them, but it is already promising to look into changing this situation in future updates.
It will be very interesting to see how the Steam Deck handles this latest Assassin’s Creed entry, especially seeing as it was once written off due to the Assassin’s Creed Shadows system requirements being too high for even the best handheld gaming PC to overcome.
Ubisoft changed its mind on this approach to the Steam Deck less than a week before launch, however, and now the game is curiously Steam Deck Verified. This announcement leaves a lot of people wondering how a game goes from incompatible to Verified in just a few weeks, but Ubisoft’s Steam post has offered some insight into why Verification might have been obtained.
In the post, it’s stated that “While graphical settings will be locked at launch, you’ll be able to choose the upscalers you want, and we’re looking into providing further options in future updates.”
Locked graphical settings aren’t ideal for anyone, and it would be smart to assume that the settings in question are the lowest graphical preset. Players will at least have control over the upscaling, with a choice of AMD FSR and Intel XeSS.
It’s possible that the locked graphical settings will only apply to the Steam Deck when playing the game through Steam, meaning anyone who has purchased their copy via Ubisoft Connect or Epic Games Store may be able to bypass this lock when using the Heroic Launcher to play Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
