The third season of Invincible was stellar from start to finish. It was a noticeable improvement over Season 2, which suffered a bit due to its slightly uneven pacing and storytelling, in large part due to its midseason break on top of the two-year wait after Season 1.
This season was much more consistent, with every episode having both great storytelling and character development combined with brutal and gory action sequences. It’s hard to rank them all in an objective order, but some episodes are definitely much greater than others.

Episode 5
“This Was Supposed To Be Easy”
Episode 5 continues the criminal underworld storytelling from the first season with the return of Titan, Isotope, and Machine Head. It was nice to see a different side of this world with more grounded, mafia-like bad guys, as opposed to the Viltrumites or Doc Seismic.
But aside from Mr. Liu’s Dragon form, there wasn’t much to this episode that really stood out. It’s still a good episode, but probably the least good in a season that otherwise had high-octane storytelling in every episode.

Episode 1
“You’re Not Laughing Now”
Episode 1 was a solid start to the new reason. It did a great job of reintroducing the existing characters while also throwing in new faces like Multi-Paul, along with the reveal that Dupli-Kate was still alive. It was also a good start for what would later become both Invincible and Atom Eve, as well as Rex Splode and Shrinking Rae’s romantic relationships.
The second half focused on the return of Doc Seismic and the heroes being entrapped by him. It was great to see the season start with a battle where all of the heroes were present and on equal footing before the split-up that happens later on.

Episode 3
“You Want A Real Costume, Right?”
Episode 3 focused on Oliver greatly, with him getting a suit, learning the ropes, and teaming up with Invincible. The Mauler Twins return, but Oliver goes overboard with his violent Viltrumite roots and shows everyone just how dangerous he can be without strict guidance and control.

Mark, Eve, Oliver, and Debbie all had multiple heartfelt scenes in this episode, and it ended with a hint towards the return of Angstrom Levy. This was a solid episode where all the plot threads worked well.

Episode 4
“You Were My Hero”
The heightened tensions between Mark and Cecil were further increased in this episode, but the main focus of the first half was an alternate-dimension subplot that had a noticeable impact on Mark’s inner conflicts. Mark gets recruited by the twins Fightmaster and Dropkick and continues the story of these two, who were originally introduced in the first episode.
The second half of the episode took to space, with the return of Omni-Man and Allen as they fought together to escape Viltrumite captivity. If that wasn’t enough, even Battle Beast returned to aid these two, and the episode ended on a high note with the classic Invincible gory action.

Episode 6
“All I Can Say Is I’m Sorry”
Aaron Paul’s Powerplex was the standout character of Episode 6. The story was a much-needed focus on the normal humans of Invincible’s world and how often they lose their own lives due to the conflicts of all the superpowered characters, whether they’re good or bad.
Powerplex surprisingly had as much screen time as Invincible himself in this episode, and the writing did a good job of making us sympathize with his character and the loss of his loved ones during the events of Season 1’s finale. The episode ended on a heartbreaking note, with Powerplex losing both his wife and his kid due to his quest for revenge.

Episode 2
“A Deal With The Devil”
Episode 2 was a big jump up from the already solid Episode 1. The first ten minutes of this one focused on a younger Cecil and greatly fleshed out his character and why he does what he does. It showed him from a protagonist’s point of view and helped viewers sympathize with him during his conflict with Mark.

The fight sequence between Mark and the Reanimen was unique and visually captivating, and it felt complex and morally gray since both Mark and Cecil had their understandable reasons for what they were doing. Still, this leads to Cecil going a bit overboard and causing what leads to the Guardians of the Globe splitting up and the reformation of the Teen Team.

Episode 7
“What Have I Done?”
Episode 7 didn’t necessarily have a lot of buildup, with only small hints of Angstrom Levy’s return, but it still did an amazing job of ramping up the tension and the stakes from the get-go. It adapted the Invincible War storyline from the comics, where Angstorm recruits 18 multiversal versions of Invincible to lay waste to Prime Mark’s world.
The episode had continuous high-stakes action combined with solid storytelling, although some fans wished this arc was longer and was adapted into two episodes instead. But it’s important to remember that the comics’ storyline was relatively short as well, and this episode arguably worked better as a one-episode arc.

Episode 8
“I Thought You’d Never Shut Up”
Both Episodes 7 and 8 are easily the two best episodes of this season, and it’s hard to choose between either as the definitive best. The Season 3 finale picked up immediately after the last episode’s ending with the introduction of the Viltrumite, Conquest, voiced by Jeffrey Dean Morgan. This episode was non-stop action, even more so than the previous one. Although, the sheer scale of the action sequences present here was on another level.
Interestingly enough, Conquest parallels Omni-Man from Season 1’s finale with his monologues to Invincible, and also parallels Angstorm from Season 2’s finale, with his face smashed to bits in the end.
The scenes and speeches from Rex Splode’s funeral were emotional, and the post-credit scene with the return of Damien Darkblood was a nice little extra flare. All in all, this episode concluded the season on a very high note.
