The following article contains spoilers for Naruto and Naruto Shippuden.

Summary

  • Byakugou Seal stores chakra for regeneration and enhanced techniques, requiring advanced control skills.
  • Sakura unlocks the seal after 3 years, surpassing Tsunade in power and improving her medical-nin abilities.
  • Creation Rebirth is the pinnacle of medical jutsu, allowing regeneration and preventing death with chakra control.

An amazing jutsu in Naruto is the Byakugou Seal, a technique that only a few characters can perform because it requires immense chakra control. Sakura Haruno is one of them, and she awakens the Byakugou during a difficult battle.

The Byakugou Seal is actually a jutsu from the time of the Sage of Six Paths, so it is a long-known technique. In Naruto, we only see medical shinobi (medical-nin) using this jutsu, but it seems that any shinobu with enough chakra control would be able to use it. Although Tsunade states that it is dangerous to use in battle (in the anime), Sakura is actually able to minimize its “bad effects”, so maybe other ninja could also do it.

What Is The Byakugou Seal?

Storing Chakra To Enhance Techniques

Tsunade activates her Hundred Healings Mark against Madara in Naruto Shippuden.

The Byakugou Seal, also known as the Reserve Seal, the Hundred Healings Mark and the Strength of a Hundred Seal, is a jutsu performed by storing a huge amount of chakra over a lengthy period of time in a specific part of the body — commonly, the forehead, but it can be any part. With the seal, the user can instantly regenerate organs and enhance their techniques.

The seal leaves a diamond-shaped mark on the body at the point where the chakra is stored. Once released, the mark spreads across the face or even across the entire body, and the user is able to perform chakra-taxing techniques more easily. This technique requires advanced chakra control skills, so not all shinobi will be able to perform it, even if they train hard.

How Sakura Unleashes The Byakugou Seal

Sakura unlocks the Byakugou Seal in Naruto Shippuden Episode 373 (“Team 7, Assemble!”), while fighting Madara with the rest of the old Team 7. She remembers her previous missions and her training with Tsunade, and is finally able to use the seal. She spent three years storing chakra before being able to unleash it, which shows how difficult this technique is.

Sakura Haruno… you are also the disciple of the Fifth Hokage.

The seal is a prerequisite for performing the Creation Rebirth, the most powerful medical jutsu known in the series. Awakening the seal means that Sakura has become strong and has immensely improved her chakra control. With this power, she is able to do much more as a medical-nin than ever before.

The Creation Rebirth Technique

Tsunade uses Creation Rebirth against Orochimaru in Naruto.

Creation Rebirth, considered the “pinnacle of medical jutsu”, is a technique that allows the user to regenerate or heal others from any type of injury, no matter how severe. It is so powerful that the user simply cannot die as long as they can keep the jutsu active — and it is a chakra-taxing jutsu, or else it wouldn’t require the Byakugou Seal in order to be performed. We have never seen it consume enough chakra for the user to stop using it.

Who Else Can Use The Byakugou?

In the series, the only characters we see using the Byakugou are Tsunade and Sakura. Mito Uzumaki has a diamond-shaped mark on her forehead that is similar to the seal’s mark, but it’s not explicitly said if it’s actually the seal — she was Tsunade’s grandmother, so there’s a good chance she also unlocked the seal.

Tsunade had another apprentice, Shizune, but she was never able to get the seal, probably because she couldn’t refine her chakra control as much as Sakura. Many fans speculate that Sarada Uchiha will eventually get the seal, but she hasn’t done it yet. Since the Byakugou Seal is an old jutsu, it is likely that many other characters have used it over time — we would likely see other users in a prequel story.

Naruto and Shippuden are available to stream on Hulu, Crunchyroll, Netflix, and other services in the US and internationally.
