For players who are willing to transform their character into a Ghoul, Fallout 76’s upcoming playable Ghoul character will provide a completely new experience throughout combat, quests, and overall exploration. The difference between humans and Ghouls will be especially noticeable in combat because of all the new Ghoul-exclusive buildcrafting tools players will have access to when Fallout 76’s Ghoul Within and Season 20 update arrives on March 18, with more bound to come in future updates.
Becoming a Ghoul in Fallout 76 will be best suited for unarmed melee builds, due to the extremely powerful unarmed melee buff that comes from becoming a fully Feral Ghoul. However, Feral or not, Ghouls can still be compatible with a variety of other weapon types, even including ranged weapons, so, players shouldn’t sleep on one underutilized gun when making their new Ghoul builds: the Gamma Gun.

Why the Gamma Gun Could Be the Perfect Weapon for Ghoul Builds in Fallout 76
The Gamma Gun Will Benefit From Huge Pistol Buffs Coming in Season 20
As of the Ghoul Within and Season 20 update for Fallout 76 coming on March 18, the Perk Cards that used to provide buffs for pistols are being removed, and pistols across the board will be receiving buffs to their base damage, VATS AP cost, and VATS critical hit multipliers to account for the Perk Cards that are being removed. Excluding the weight of their ammo, pistols are generally some of the lightest weapons in Fallout 76. So, with these pistol buffs coming in Fallout 76 Season 20, the Gamma Gun and most other pistols will be considerably powerful weapons that can add value to any existing builds, with little to no additional investment.
The Gamma Gun Provides Easy Access to Radiation for Fueling Ghoul’s Glow Mechanic
Aside from how powerful the Gamma Gun is expected to become thanks to the pistol buffs, this weapon has an additional utility that will be especially helpful for Ghouls. Since the Gamma Gun deals high amounts of radiation damage in an AoE, players can shoot it at their feet to deal radiation damage to themselves. On a human build, radiation will lower players’ health, but for Ghouls, it will heal them and even fuel their new Glow mechanic.
Even for players who aren’t planning on transforming their character into a Ghoul, taking radiation damage from the Gamma Gun can be a convenient way to drop below 20% health for the full benefits of a Bloodied-Unyielding meta build in Fallout 76.
On its own, the new Glow mechanic for Ghoul builds in Fallout 76 will give players an additional health bar, effectively doubling their base health. Additional Ghoul-exclusive Perk Cards can be equipped to provide further effects based on players’ Glow, such as increasing weapon damage, reducing incoming damage, or even providing buffs to nearby Ghoul teammates. So, naturally, players will want to have their Glow as high as possible at all times, which is what makes the Gamma Gun such a great tool to have handy.
The Gamma Gun Could Be the Ultimate Buildcrafting Tool For Ghouls
Whether players are looking to create a dedicated pistol build, to carry a pistol as a backup to their primary weapons, or Ghoul players who want a convenient way to generate radiation and Glow on the go, players should look no further than the Gamma Gun. Like other pistols, this weapon may have developed a reputation for performing far below some of the best weapons in Fallout 76, though upcoming buffs and some of the new Ghoul mechanics will finally make this once-underutilized weapon into the ultimate buildcrafting tool, especially for Ghoul builds. So, while players are putting together their new Ghoul builds after Fallout 76’s Ghoul Within update releases, players shouldn’t sleep on the Gamma Gun.
