The Last of Us’ HBO Future May Have Revealed More About Part 3 Than Meets the Eye

There is a lot of emotion and incredibly high stakes, with tensions rising between all the characters, particularly between Ellie and Joel, and with the constant threat of the infected on everyone’s minds, it is only a matter of time before something terrible happens and there are more than a few hints for what is to come crammed into the trailer itself.

Joel’s Watch
A Constant Reminder
Symbols are an incredibly important part of The Last of Us, representing hope, fear, and anything in between. In the latest trailer, viewers are shown an extended shot of Joel’s watch, an artifact that can be found in the second game and a reminder of the constant passage of time, whilst representing those who have lost their lives and will forever be frozen in death.
The appearance of the watch comes from the encounter in the hospital at the end of season 1, with Joel continuing to wear it despite its lack of functionality as an ode to his daughter. It is clear that in the next season, time will be of the essence, and as fans of the games know, it’s only a matter of time before it switches owners.

Fireflies
Mourning The Dead
The climax of season one showed one of the most heroic, reckless, and defiant acts in the entire show, with Joel storming the Fireflies hospital and gunning down everyone in his path in order to save Ellie. Whether it was foolish or selfish or even plain stupid is up for debate, but what’s done is done and Joel will have to live with his decision till the day he dies.

If The Last of Us Part 3 Never Happens, Several Hanging Plot Threads Can’t Go Unanswered
Recent comments by Neil Druckmann paint a concerning picture for The Last of Us’ future, which could leave fans without answers.
The trailer depicts a series of graves bearing symbols of the Fireflies dangling from them, with a giraffe walking just in the distance behind. All of these put together suggest that this scene takes place back in Salt Lake City, but it is yet to be seen whether this will be a flashback, a returning location or some other reference to the past.

Spores
More Than Just A Bite
It is no secret about where the cordyceps virus comes from and how it is spread. The fungus itself is shown to emit powerful spores into the air that can enter the airways and bloodstream, making the infection incredibly easy to transmit and dangerous to enter certain areas without protection. Of course, the enemies themselves can cause the infection, with the spores being a more natural, passive way of spreading.
In the show, the depiction of the infected differs slightly from that in the games. Spores were omitted in the first season in place of infectious tendrils and traditional bites to spread the virus. But the trailers show very clearly at several points, that the airborne variant is coming, whether a mutation, an adaptation, or a new discovery. In any case, it is twice as dangerous to encounter in the wild and will surely cause significant problems for the characters down the line.

Seattle
The Journey Presses On
The story of the games takes players across the United States. From sunny California to snowy Colorado, to Washington State, and within it, Seattle. In the second game, Seattle is a major location that introduces the Washington Liberation Front and their control of the city, and their fight against the Seraphites.
Marching on horseback, Ellie and Joel are seen moving towards Seattle on their journey, another step in their quest for survival, but it is there where many characters are introduced, both good and bad, and the story takes a turn for the worse in dramatic and serious ways.

Wyoming Museum
Happiness In The Apocalypse
While The Last of Us is known for its distinctive zombie enemies and world, the story takes the spotlight throughout, showing heartbreak and trauma and the importance of family when the going gets tough. There are many scenes where Ellie and Joel are seen bonding and enjoying themselves, despite being surrounded by doom and gloom in the outside world.
One such instance of this in the games is in a flashback to a visit to the Wyoming Museum of Science and History. This occurs upon reaching Seattle and shows the potential joy and happiness that can be found in the apocalypse. The trailer shows this very scene once again, whether a flashback or a present-day event, however, it is yet to be seen, with both having significant implications on when and where the timeline is being taken.
3
Seraphites
War For Control
In the show and the games, many groups of individuals are shown to band together to increase their chances of survival, whether by creating towns and communities for longevity or staying on the road as hunter-gatherers who prey on individuals who step too far from the path.

The Last Of Us Fans Should Watch This Series While Waiting For Season 2
The Last of Us isn’t the only post-apocalyptic survival thriller TV show out there. Some even have vampires.
The Seraphites are one such group, a fairly primitive cult, who are at constant odds with the WLF and provide an additional threat to anyone in the area who isn’t on their side. They do some pretty despicable things to the characters and the sequences of events that unfold as a result of their involvement are both horrible and evil, with a few glimpses of what’s to come being shown in the trailer.

Isaac Dixon
As Vicious as a Wolf
With so much focus placed on Abby, it is easy to remember the secondary villain in The Last of Us Part 2, Isaac Dixon. He is a tyrannical leader and fights with his army of WLF soldiers against the Seraphites and anyone else who attempts to oppose his agenda or gets on his wrong side.
He will surely play a pivotal role in the second season, much in the way he orchestrated several moments between the main characters within the game world. Maintaining Jeffrey Wright for the live-action depiction is a nice addition for any fans who recognized his voice in the games and his on-screen performances will surely be just as despicable as in-game.
1
A Promise
The Truth Comes Out In The End
The dynamic duo of Ellie and Joel might have saved each other several times over, but it is clear that there is friction and potential issues that the two will need to tackle. At the end of the first season, Ellie makes Joel promise that what he said about the Fireflies was true, that they didn’t need her anymore, and that they had many immune people to create a cure from.
Then, at the end of the season two trailer, Ellie is seen emotionally crying out to Joel, clearly after some revelation or secret is revealed which, judging by the line “You Swore”, can only be in reference to the promise he said he would keep.
