Instead of exploring the Living Lands all alone, Avowed throws a diverse cast of four unique companions at players to make their journey even richer and more immersive. Each companion brings their own playstyle, abilities, and lore, making party composition important and something to always consider while building a powerful Envoy. Since players can only have two companions in their party at a time, finding the best ones based on their synergy and how they complement different builds is essential.
While all four companions have their strengths and weaknesses, some stand out more than others. From tanking and crowd control to healing, ranged attacks, and utility, each one caters to a different playstyle. Here is a rundown of the best companions in Avowed to help players decide which two are worth keeping by their side.

Marius
Treads the Line Between Rogue and Trapper
Marius is the archetype ranger in Avowed. He can bind enemies, fire piercing shots from his bow, apply debuffs, and perform assassinations by vanishing and reappearing behind enemies. All that certainly sounds useful, but his vast skill set proves a bit underwhelming when compared to other companions in the game.
While Marius can slow enemies and reduce their damage, Kai offers far superior crowd control through taunts. His piercing shot is ineffective against full-health enemies, making it a wasted ability in most situations. Summoning roots is a strong crowd control option, but rangers already start with this ability, and fighters and casters have their own efficient methods of immobilizing enemies.
The Shadow Step ability, which allows Marius to strike from behind, sounds promising. However, setting up this combo with Binding Roots to stun and deliver a powerful attack feels inefficient. Players can deal more damage to stunned enemies themselves without wasting time trying to position Marius for a quick kill.

Yatzli
Likes to Flirt and Make Explosions
Yatzli has a penchant for fireballs and explosions. She, however, offers far more than raw arcane power. Yatzli plays an important role as a Godless expert to progress the main storyline of Avowed. Her abilities, including conjuring explosive blasts and unleashing missile volleys, excel at dealing elemental damage, disrupting enemies, and breaking their defenses.
The added effects of fire, shock, and frost accumulation make her particularly effective against various enemy types. She also brings valuable crowd control by slowing enemies within a wide area of effect, offering players better control during chaotic battles.
Despite her strengths, Yatzli’s reliance on cooldowns and setup time makes her less reliable than companions like Kai or Giatta. While her skills are powerful, they require precise timing and positioning to be effective, making her best suited for players who prefer tactical gameplay to straightforward damage or healing.
Yatzli may not be the best companion in Avowed, but she is certainly fun to play with. Plus, her ability to dispel illusions becomes essential in the later regions, so players will have to keep her in their parties regardless.

Giatta
Heals, Shields, and Buffs Everyone
Giatta is a powerful support caster who uses animancy to provide exceptional healing and protection for the entire party, not just the player. Her abilities include summoning a wave of energy that heals everyone and creating barriers that absorb damage before ending with a restorative burst of healing. With passive healing abilities as well, Giatta proves to be an indispensable companion, especially when playing Avowed on Path of the Damned.
Ranged (pistol/arquebuses) builds make it easier to play on high difficulty settings, so players do not have to rely that much on Giatta for heals.
For high-risk, high-reward melee builds, Giatta offers invaluable buffs that temporarily boost movement and attack speed, along with damage and cooldown reduction. That said, no matter how players build their main character, Giatta remains a versatile and reliable companion, ensuring everyone stays alive and fighting for longer. It is hard to leave her behind after she joins players on their quest.
1
Kai
Taunts and Tanks Damage, a Lot of Damage
Kai is a formidable front-line fighter who likes to jump straight into combat, gaining enemy aggro and tanking as much damage as possible. His aggressive playstyle keeps players safe and free to pick their targets while enemies focus on Kai.
Being the first companion to join the Imperial Envoy on his quest to stop the Dreamscourge, Kai proves invaluable until the end of the game.
However, what really makes Kai one of the best companions in Avowed is not just his ability to soak damage or act as a meat shield for players. He can fire a powerful blunderbuss to deliver high stun damage and taunt enemies. This gives players a reliable way to peel enemies off themselves whenever needed, such as those annoying skeletons and dreamthralls.
Additionally, he is a tank that lives twice. He has ways to significantly reduce incoming damage and even revive himself after falling, ensuring players always have a dependable companion taunting and tanking enemies. When it comes to sheer survival, Kai is simply unmatched among all companions in Avowed.
