With so many sets to choose from in the Pokemon TCG, it can be difficult to find the right product if you’re focused on collecting your favorite Pokemon. While you might expect plenty of sets to feature a popular Pokemon like Gengar, there are surprisingly a relatively small number of sets that boast beautiful Gengar cards.

Pokemon TCG: The 12 Most Valuable Cards In Unified Minds
Tag Teams are a major theme in Sun & Moon, especially among the most expensive Unified Minds cards.
Despite the slim pickings, we’ve analyzed some of the best sets that include Gengar chase cards to determine which sets you should open to collect Gengar. The best sets for Gengar will include a mix of sets with varying price points, but unfortunately, there isn’t a clear option if you want high value for low risk.
5
Skyridge
Two Gengar
Skyridge is widely considered to be one of the best, albeit one of the most valuable sets to ever grace the Pokemon TCG. Despite the exorbitant cost (you can expect to pay well over $1,000 per pack), this set offers a chance at one of the two nearly identical Gengar chase cards.
With a Holo Rare and a regular Rare version to enjoy, you double your chances at a hit in this set, but the cost to open this product is extremely prohibitive on most budgets. Despite the gargantuan risk you take opening this product, you’ll struggle to replicate the feeling of pulling either Gengar.
4
Arceus
Three Gengar
For a slightly more affordable, but still excessively expensive Gengar chase card hunt, Arceus offers three different cards to hunt in its set. Unfortunately, the cost to open this product is similar to Skyridge, though the rewards are nowhere near comparison, with the most valuable Gengar chase card in Arceus failing to command over $100.
While it’s always a bad idea to expect to recoup your money when opening packs of cards, this set won’t put dollars back into your wallet, even if you hit all three Gengar chase cards. Despite the horrible chance of seeing a return on your investment, there are three unique Gengar to enjoy in Arceus, with an unusual border-breaking design.
3
Fusion Strike
Three Gengar
Fusion Strike might be one of the most recognizable and expensive products from the Sword and Shield era thanks to its collection of valuable chase cards. Luckily, as a modern product, you can buy Fusion Strike packs for a far more affordable price than Arceus or Skyridge, with boosters often selling for roughly ten dollars.

We take a look at the most expensive full art trainer cards you can get in Pokemon TCG.
Compared to the over $1,000 cost of Skyridge packs, Fusion Strike feels deserving of being called the best choice for bargain hunters if you want to chase an amazing Gengar card. Most of your interest will be directed toward the Alternate Art card, but the regular VMAX Ultra Rare still offers a solid consolation prize even if you don’t strike the top card.
2
Team Up
Four Gengar
While Team Up will cost you several times more money per pack than Fusion Strike, this set and its incredible collection of valuable cards blows Fusion Strike out of the water. For strictly Gengar collectors, there’s no comparison between the four distinct scenes featuring Gengar (along with Mimikyu) in Team Up.
While the Full Art and Secret Rare feature the same artwork with different color palettes, the Alternate Art and Ultra Rare versions feature beautiful and unique depictions of this Ghost-type with his peer, Mimikyu.
The top chase card is a stunning, spooky scene that perfectly encapsulates Gengar’s essence, and even the consolation chase cards feature top-tier art with high price tags to boot, making this set exciting to open, even if you hit a non-Gengar card.
1
XY Phantom Forces
Five Gengar
Phantom Forces would have been tied with Team Up with four Gengar cards if not for the inclusion of the Gengar Spirit Link Trainer card, which gives this set the advantage in sheer variety. However, variety aside, the quality of the art in this set is superb, with the Gengar EX full art captivating our attention with a beautiful explosion of color in the background.
If you’re able to nab the big one, then expect an almost $300 return on it, somewhat offsetting the mammoth cost that comes with sets from the XY era. The other three consolation Gengar chase cards are all below $100, but each one boasts solid value worth jumping up and down about.
Hunting one of the most expensive Gengar chase cards is enough to get your blood pumping, but you can also expect to find some other gorgeous Phantom Forces cards in this set, even if Gengar eludes you.
