Tokyo Xtreme Racer blends the old, arcade feel of a traditional racing game with slick mechanics that give it a fresh spin. As you drive through the roads of Tokyo, you’ll come across several challenges, including racers, crossroads, and upgrades that you’ll have to make decisions around.

The Best Racing Games On Xbox Game Pass
From arcades to simulators, there’s at least one racing experience for you on Xbox Game Pass.
While the game offers many choices and mechanics for newcomers to enjoy it the way they wish, certain tips and tricks are essential to follow for the best experience. These will help you hone your driving skills, while also improving the game’s rewards and quality of life as you progress through it.
Buying Your First Car
With a limited budget and infinite dreams, you’ll start your journey by selecting a car to begin your adventures with. Your options are to choose from a Toyota, Mazda, and a Suzuki. We recommend picking the Toyota Sprinter Trueno GT-Apex, as it’s an all-rounder car great for starting out.
Right off the bat, the car’s acceleration and handling on the road give you a balanced performance—not too light or unpredictable, and not too heavy or sturdy. It’s ideal for quickly jumping into the game and taking the streets by storm.
Don’t worry about making the wrong choice, since Tokyo Xtreme Racer provides you with the option to improve your car’s major stats (such as acceleration and braking) across a wide spectrum of upgrades. From new skills to engine-based upgrades, there’s a lot you can do for your car.
Choosing An Entry Point
When you’re in your garage, you will have the option to start driving through an entry point on the map. These are different roads on the map, where you can see points of interest and opponents that are driving in a certain direction.
You want to choose an entry point that you’re comfortable with—knowledge that you’ll acquire after a couple of different runs. Usually, this should be a road that doesn’t have a lot of turns at the beginning, so you can focus on warming up your drive as if practicing a drag race.
Additionally, you want to keep in mind the undiscovered roads and parking spots that are found across the map. Although finding a parking space is a bit of a problem since they’re so easy to drive past, you can keep racing strangers to eventually find a road that leads you to new areas.
If you’re feeling a little confident, try entering the map through a road shared by an opponent. You can see them marked on the map!
Spend Your CP And BP Wisely
When you successfully defeat a rival in a race, you earn BP. This lets you spend points on upgrades that improve your car’s perks. We recommend paying attention to acceleration and power in the early stages, as these can take things up a notch for upcoming races.
If you’d rather play it safe, getting better brakes can improve your car’s consistency on the roads. Especially when you wish to drift, having improved breaks can help you navigate through the traffic.
If you truly want to take a look under the hood and get into the details, fine-tuning is an excellent option for you. This will let you reduce your vehicle’s weight, customize the car’s acceleration, set the suspension right, and more.
Perform Drifts When Necessary
While the game seldom asks you to focus on drifting, it’s a neat mechanic that can help you win many races. Your car will start performing a drift by simply triggering the handbrake at the right time. Mastering this technique will take time, though!
To perform a drift without crashing into another vehicle (or hitting the pavement), carefully take a look at what you can expect on the road as you drive. If you can see a turn that’s coming in within a few seconds, starting to drift earlier can help you take a sharper turn.
If you are skilled enough, you can even drift-slam into opponents during a race. This is a high-risk-high-reward scenario that should only be tired when you’re confident enough with your drifting skills.
Crossroads can be tricky to navigate. When drifting, stay aware of roads that you’re not supposed to take.
Master The Art Of Acceleration
Many would argue that acceleration is the underrecognized king of high-speed races. You can perform all the neat drifts and nitro-boosts, but getting your car’s acceleration right can win you most races in Tokyo Xtreme Racer.
If you can get ahead of your opponent simply through acceleration, it’ll be easier to stay ahead. To stay ahead, make sure they keep hitting your rear instead of overtaking you.
You can always switch between Manual and Auto transmission to see what works best for you when it comes to acceleration.
Trigger Races Outside Your Comfort Zone
When choosing your point of entry, you’re likely going to take the same road over and over again. After all, that is the safe choice and will help you improve consistently. However, there’s another way of going about this.
Every time you’re asked to select a spawn point on the map, try to take on routes that you’re completely unaware of. This will feel a bit uncomfortable at first, but the more you blindly explore the map, the more rewarding it will be.
Through this method, you’ll come across spots and racers that you haven’t met before. Every time you see a stranger who’s willing to race you, simply flash your lights and trigger a race. The more you do this, the better.
Don’t be afraid of slamming into opponents while racing against them. Playing dirty can be a rewarding experience.
Take A Break Between Races
Whether you’re looking for your next race or simply cruising through the roads of Tokyo, it’s important to return to the garage occasionally. This is so because your car’s tires wear out eventually, and you’ll need to get them fixed often.
Your tires’ health is indicated through the icons at the bottom right of the screen. If they’re white, then you have nothing to worry about. But, if they’re slowly turning yellow (and eventually red), it means that you’ll need to return to your garage as soon as you can.
If you don’t replace your tires soon, your car will start steering out of control, and you may lose grip over time. This can be highly dangerous during races, especially if your opponent is tough and you have a hard time keeping up with them.
Progress Through Exploration
Tokyo Xtreme Racer isn’t just about being the fastest racer—it’s about the people you meet, the upgrades you invest in, and the legacy you leave behind. All of this comes together when you’re paying attention to what characters have to say, and how you customize your car.
But more importantly, these things happen naturally the more you explore the map. Whether you decide to find a new parking spot, race against a new Wanderer, or simply free-roam as you wish, everything is open to your interpretation.
Before you explore and earn enough to be able to afford a new car, try spending as much CP as you can on your starter car. This way, your expenses will be well invested in making the best of your first car, letting you spend more time uncovering new areas on the map.
