Fans of shonen manga consider Naruto as one of the “OGs” – especially in tandem with its Shonen Jump batchmates Bleach and Naruto at the time. While modern counterparts in the form of My Hero Academia and Demon Slayer already ended, Naruto’s story lives on through his son’s story in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations and its Two Blue Vortex sequel. Unfortunately, this also meant Boruto Uzumaki’s story also has its fair share of new characters and villains – all of which have proposed numerous new dream matchups in the eyes of fans.

Naruto: 8 Most Emotional Battles, Ranked
There have been plenty of emotional confrontations in the Naruto franchise, with these examples being some of the best.
However, for fans who want to look back at Naruto’s iconic fights might also want to remember which characters had the most victories. And while Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha are already standouts due to their role in the story, other characters who had the most wins in their matches might come up as a surprise for many.
10
Orochimaru
A Sannin Worthy Of The Name
Wins: 5
Notable Battles:
- Orochimaru vs Sasuke, Sakura, and Naruto (Part 1)
- Orochimaru vs Sasuke (Part 1)
- Orochimaru vs Anko (Part 1)
- Orochimaru vs Naruto (Part 2)
- Orochimaru vs Kabuto (Part 2)
Being the first major antagonist of the Naruto series, it makes sense for Orochimaru to need a show of force to cement himself as a villain through and through. The character’s obsession for ultimate power and eternal life is reflected in his schemes throughout the series, particularly his desire to obtain Sasuke Uchiha’s body. While Orochimaru easily defeats Team 7 (especially Sasuke) and his former protege Anko in the Forest of Death, his most notable feats include fighting the Third Hokage until his death and even besting a Four-Tailed Naruto.
Unfortunately, Orochimaru eventually begins paling in comparison for the rest of the series – not just because of the arrival of other characters, but because of his growing “irrelevance” compared to the grander scheme of things. The only other instances of Orochimaru winning in the series include flashbacks against weaker characters (such as a younger Kabuto), or outright draws.
9
Kankuro
A Puppetteer With A Surprising Brilliance
Wins: 5
Notable Battles:
- Kankuro vs Tsurugi (Part 1)
- Kankuro & Kiba vs Sakon and Ukon (Part 1)
- Kankuro & Sai vs Sasori & Deidara (Part 2)
- Kankuro & Mifune vs Deidara (Part 2)
- Kankuro, Naruto & Mifune vs Kimimaro & Chiyo (Part 2)
Among characters introduced in Naruto, Kankuro was an oddity due to his powerset: thanks to his Chakra Puppeteering, he’s able to control various puppets in battle. Being one of the Sand Siblings, Kankuro is introduced with a vicious streak – especially notable for one of the goriest deaths in the Naruto franchise that involves placing Sakon and Ukon inside one of his puppets before stabbing them to death. Kankuro’s other victories were in team fights, such as his victory against reanimated Sasori and Deidara thanks to Sai, as well as another fight with Deidara with Mifune.
Interestingly enough, Kankuro’s other fights in a standstill also involved other characters, such as himself, Gaara, Temari, and Darui trying to subdue Sasuke in Part 2 as well as a decisive defeat against Sasori – which is a prodigious Chakra Puppeteer. Either way, it’s surprising for Kankuro to have more victories in fights compared to Naruto’s batchmates in Konoha Eleven.
8
Pain/Nagato
The Akatsuki Leader Who Introduces The Endgame
Wins: 6
Notable Battles:
- Pain vs Jiraiya (Part 2)
- Pain vs Kakashi & Choji (Part 2)
- Pain vs Kiba (Part 2)
- Pain vs Hinata (Part 2)
- Pain vs Hanzo (Part 2)
- Pain vs Utakata (Part 2)
When fans of Naruto finish the Pain Arc in Part 2, they might think they’ve reached a somewhat reasonable conclusion in the series – that is, until the confrontation with Pain/Nagato reveals there are even more forces at work. The fights involving Pain/Nagato were quite tense in the series, as he’s arguably among the most broken characters in the franchise due to his powerset. The Rinnegan alone grants him the abilities enshrined in the Six Paths Technique, which through Pain is manifested through his bodies.
As such, it’s no surprise Pain/Nagato has a reasonable winning streak, especially in his assault in Konoha where he made quick work of Kakashi Hatake, Choji Akamichi, Kiba Inuzuka, and Konohamaru Sarutobi in separate confrontations. The most tragic victories of Pain/Nagato involved Jiraiya’s death, as well as Hinata Hyuga’s defense of Naruto – a selfless act on Hinata’s part that duly prompted a meltdown from Naruto that almost led to the Nine-Tails fully controlling him.
7
Itachi Uchiha
Sasuke’s Vengeance Personified Who Ended Up Being A Fan-Favorite
Wins: 6
Notable Battles:
- Itachi vs Orochimaru (Part 2)
- Itachi vs Deidara (Part 2)
- Itachi, Naruto & Killer B vs Nagato (Part 2)
- Itachi & Sasuke vs Kabuto (Part 2)
- Itachi & Kakuzu vs Hidan (Part 2)
- Itachi vs Yagura (Part 2)
Ever since Sasuke Uchiha’s introduction in the Naruto franchise, his brother Itachi Uchiha has become a notable character in the series – especially for the infamy attached to the character. Having single-handedly massacred his entire clan, an air of fear has always been attached to the missing-nin. Not to mention, his debut demonstrating his capability of fighting Konoha’s elite jonin (Kakashi Hatake, Asuma Sarutobi, Kurenai Yuhi and Might Guy) and a Sannin (Jiraiya, alongside students Naruto and Sasuke) to a standstill without using his Mangekyo Sharingan has established him as a threat to watch out for.

8 Biggest Humiliations In Naruto, Ranked
There have been several embarrassing defeats throughout the Naruto series. These examples tend to stick out.
This becomes even more evident in Itachi’s fights in Part 2, as he manages to thwart off Orochimaru’s attempt to steal his body, incapacitate Deidara, and even defeat an Orochimaru-trained Sasuke despite years of grueling training. Sasuke manages to kill him and activate his own Mangekyo Sharingan after an intense battle – but this didn’t stop Itachi from establishing his prowess. Even in death, Itachi reveals his prodigious nature – he manages to stop Kabuto Yakushi from controlling his corpse with an intricate plan and even assists Naruto and Killer Bee in defeating Nagato, who possessed the powerful Rinnegan. Itachi and Sasuke even manage to incapacitate Kabuto, who at that point had possessed Orochimaru’s incredible healing prowess and powerful Sage Mode.
6
Shikamaru Nara
Konoha’s Resident Genius
Wins: 6
Notable Battles:
- Shikamaru vs Kin (Part 1)
- Shikamaru & Asuma vs Sound Nin (Part 1)
- Shikamaru & Temari vs Tayuya (Part 1)
- Shikamaru vs Hidan (Part 2)
- Shikamaru, Choji & Ino vs Asuma (Part 2)
- Shikamaru, Choji, Neji & Kiba vs Sound Four (Part 2)
For someone who’s declared he hates getting work done, Shikamaru Nara has been in quite a number of fights in the Naruto series. Considered as one of the Naruto’s closest friends, Shikamaru is a proud slacker also known for his tactical prowess. He demonstrates his early in the series when he practically defeats the all-around attacker Temari of the Sand Siblings with the genius use of his Shadow Manipulation, and with her help also defeat Tayuya of the Sound Four during the Sasuke Retrieval Arc.
While Shikamaru in the early arcs of Part 2 only managed to get a team fight against newcomer Sai to a draw, he makes up for it quickly by avenging the death of his mentor Asuma against the practically-immortal Hidan. Team Ino-Shika-Cho (with Ino Yamanaka and Choji) even manages to defeat their revived mentor in the beginning parts of the Fourth Great Ninja War, proving their growth as characters.
5
Madara Uchiha
One Of Konoha’s Founders, A Figure Others Could Only Force Into A Draw
Wins: 7
Notable Battles:
- Madara & Mu vs Naruto, Gaara, Onoki & Temari (Part 2)
- Madara vs 5 Kage (Part 2)
- Madara & Obito vs Neji, Hinata & Hiashi (Part 2)
- Madara vs Sasuke, Naruto & Sai (Part 2)
- Madara vs Gaara, Naruto & Killer B (Part 2)
- Madara vs Tobirama (Part 2)
- Jinchuriki Madara vs Minato, Kakashi & Gaara (Part 2)
Not a lot of people expected Madara Uchiha to be Naruto’s “biggest bad” (aside from Kaguya), especially when Obito Uchiha became quite a strong candidate due to his life-long grudge against Konoha. Being a latecomer to the series, one might be surprised to find that Madara did have a surprising list of victories ahead of him. And while not as many as one would expect for his screentime, Madara is easily one of the most powerful people in the Narutoverse, making fights with him no cakewalks indeed – especially with his Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan.
While Madara’s powers are teased after his resurrected form defeats various ninja while in Kabuto’s “control,” Madara managing to break his seal and “go rogue” has easily established him as a threat to watch out for. Madara’s most notable fights include persistent draws against his eternal rival Hashirama Senju, the easy defeat of the Five Kage, and a match with Might Guy who had to activate the lethal Eighth Gate that almost killed the old Uchiha. Madara (and Obito) fights various powerhouses of the Allied Shinobi Houses to a standstill, especially Naruto, and becomes especially potent in his Jinchuriki Form. Even Naruto and Sasuke, who had been dead and revived by the Sage of Six Paths, only managed to fight him to a draw.
4
Gaara
A Lonely But Brutal Boy Saved By Naruto’s Friendship
Wins: 8
Notable Battles:
- Gaara vs Shigure (Part 1)
- Gaara vs Lee (Part 1)
- Gaara vs Rasa (Part 2)
- Gaara & Onoki vs Gengetsu (Part 2)
- Gaara, Naruto & Temari vs A (Part 2)
- Gaara, Killer B & Naruto vs Yamato (Part 2)
- Gaara, Killer B & Naruto vs Itachi, Sasori & Deidara (Part 2)
- Gaara, Roshi, Fu, Killer B & Naruto vs Orochimaru & Kabuto (Part 2)
Serving as one of Part 1’s secondary antagonists, Gaara was known for his bloodthirst – a fact made even scarier by the fact that he was also the One-Tail’s Jinchuriki. While a defeat from Naruto would “wake up” Gaara into being a kinder person, this fact didn’t change Gaara’s inherent combat prowess at all. Gaara was at the peak of his brutality in Part 1, particularly in moments when he casually crushes Shigure to death in the Forest of Death and breaks Lee’s foot in their fight. Had it not been for the Konoha Crush, Gaara has the potential for a decisive victory against Sasuke as well.

8 Naruto Arcs With The Best Stories, Ranked
Throughout the story of Naruto, some narrative arcs have been more memorable among fans for a variety of reasons.
While Gaara is easily caught by Deidara as well as fought Sasuke to a standstill (alongside his siblings and Darui) in Part 2, he proves his prowess by defeating Yamato, Sasori and Deidara, as well as Orochimaru and Kabuto on separate occasions. During the Fourth Great Ninja War, Gaara also defeats the reanimated version of his father Rasa as well as the reanimated Second Mizukage (with Onoki). Unfortunately, Gaara and the other Kage are easily bested by Madara Uchiha in the War’s climax.
3
Kakashi Hatake
Ended Up As More Than Just A Mentor
Wins: 8
Notable Battles:
- Kakashi vs Naruto (Part 1)
- Kakash vsi Sakura (Part 1)
- Kakashi vs Sasuke (Part 1)
- Kakashi vs Zabuza (Part 1)
- Kakashi vs Zabuza (Part 1)
- Kakashi vs Yamato (Part 2)
- Kakashi vs Obito (Part 2)
- Kakashi vs Zabuza & Haku (Part 2)
The masked Kakashi Hatake, who never seemed to show his face until the sequel series, became a popular Naruto character not just for his cool demeanor but also the possession of the Sharingan – despite not being an Uchiha. Kakashi’s prowess as the Copy Ninja is easily demonstrated by winning the fight against Zabuza in his Team 7’s first mission, as well as resisting Itachi Uchiha’s potent genjutsu.
While Kakashi is showcased more as a mentor in Part 1, he gets a more prominent role in Part 2. Much of his early team fights were often draws, and he concedes to Naruto after the latter finally learns the Rasenshuriken. Other fights involving Kakashi were flashbacks, such as in instances where he won against Yamato in their ANBU days as well as against Obito back in their youth. Kakashi does square off against reanimated Haku and Zabuza and wins, and even defeats a Jinchuriki Obito in the Fourth Great Ninja War. With Kakashi’s story revealed to having a more significant role in the Naruto story, it makes sense for the mentor to have more fights.
2
Sasuke Uchiha
The Uchiha Massacre Survivor With A Grudge
Wins: 13
Notable Battles:
- Sasuke and Naruto vs Oboro (Part 1)
- Sasuke vs Sound Nin Trio (Part 1)
- Sasuke vs Yoroi (Part 1)
- Sasuke vs Temari (Part 1)
- Sasuke vs Naruto (Part 1)
- Sasuke vs Orochimaru (Part 2)
- Sasuke & Suigetsu vs Jugo (Part 2)
- Sasuke vs Deidara & Tobi (Part 2)
- Sasuke vs Itachi (Part 2)
- Sasuke vs Danzo (Part 2)
- Sasuke & Itachi vs Kabuto (Part 2)
- Sasuke & Naruto vs Jinchuriki Obito (Part 2)
- Team 7 vs Kaguya (Part 2)
The somber Sasuke Uchiha was introduced as the sole survivor of the Uchiha Massacre, having spent most of the series in pursuit of vengeance against his older brother Itachi for the horrific act. Being a prodigy, Sasuke demonstrates immense potential – having temporarily incapacitated a jonin like Zabuza as a genin in their first mission, and even managed to defeat a wide variety of Sound Ninjas throughout the Chunin Exams. While his fights with the vicious Gaara were interrupted, Sasuke immediately cements his superiority after defeating a Nine-Tails-empowered Naruto before the end of Part 1.
As such, Sasuke has become quite the formidable foe to watch out for when he defects to Orochimaru’s faction in Part 2. Aside from besting an attempt from Orochimaru to get his body, defeating future teammates (Suigetsu and Jugo), and even fending off Akatsuki members (Deidara and Tobi), Sasuke also finally defeats Itachi in their climactic sibling showdown. The deuteragonist even manages to defeat Danzo, a Konoha elder armed with a Sharingan and the equivalent of a hard reset whenever he dies. In the Fourth Great Ninja War, Sasuke and Naruto manage to defeat Jinchuriki Obito and have an actual god (Kaguya Otsutsuki) at a standstill long enough to be sealed. However, Sasuke does end up in a draw in his final fight against Naruto.

- Naruto, Killer B & Gaara vs Itachi, Sasori & Deidara (Part 2)
- Naruto & Roshi, Gaara, Fu, Killer B vs Orochimaru & Kabuto (Part 2)
- Team 7 vs Kaguya (Part 2)
Series protagonist Naruto Uzumaki is infamous for his ability to talk down villains into surrendering or changing their ways with the Talk-no-jutsu, but he’s no slouch either. It’s no surprise that Naruto won the most victories in the series, especially in the early parts of the anime where Naruto (and Sasuke) managed to outwit Zabuza before Kakashi swooped in for the assist as well as defeat Kiba and Neji in the Chunin Exams. Naruto even managed to defeat the bloodthirsty Gaara after he manifested the One-Tails, although had met significant opposition against Tsunade, Kabuto, the Sound Four, and even Sasuke himself in the end of Part 1.
After training under Jiraiya, Naruto in Part 2 has evidently become much stronger – despite early draws and a decisive defeat against Orochimaru in a berserk Nine-Tails state, Naruto defeats Kakashi after learning the Rasenshuriken as well as Kakuzu after using the technique to molecularly decimate his cells. After Pain defeats Hinata, an enraged Nine-Tails Naruto manages to defeat him – and then encourages an ailing Nagato to restore the damage he caused. Since uniting with the Nine-Tails, Naruto has experienced more victories with his Sage Mode and even Kurama Chakra Mode – especially against reincarnated Kages. Although suffering draws against Tobi and Madara, he does win against Jinchuriki Obito (with Sasuke), and with the deuteragonist manages to seal an actual god (Kaguya Otsutsuki) before suffering a draw at the hands of the same friend at the very end of the series.
