Monster Hunter Wilds has a laundry list of new and old monsters you will want to fight, then farm to get parts from. Some of these monsters are old friends from the series, while others monsters are new in Monster Hunter Wilds.
One of the returning monsters is something called a Gypceros. This kind of goofy-looking monster was introduced in the original Monster Hunter game, a challenging title for PlayStation 2. Its moves are basically the same as they were in the original game, but you might need a refreasher or some info on this guy if you’ve never fought it before.

Monster Hunter Wilds: What Are Fanged Beasts
Fanged Beasts are a specific type of monster you’ll face in Monster Hunter Wilds; here’s which ones hit that category.
Gypceros Moveset
The Gypceros is an old monster you can battle in other Monster Hunter games, so it’s a fairly easy one with pretty simple moves. It does have a couple of things you need to watch out for, mainly its tail and its poison spit.
Poison Charges
-
-
When the Monster Hunter Wilds monster called Gypceros mantles its wings out and starts running toward you, this is the charge. It will fling poison to its left and right as it runs, charging, turning, then charging, turning, and charging and turning one last time. It can also bite at the end of this if you are in melee range of it. You can interrupt it with an item, or you can dodge to get far to the side of it as it runs by.
Poison Spit
-
-
The Gypceros can spit poison from its mouth with almost no wind up; you can sort of see it coming when it rears its head back. You will want to be constantly on the move to make sure it doesn’t throw up poison right into your face. It usually spits poison a handful of times before moving into something else.
Light Stun
-
-
If you see a couple of light flashes near the Gypceros’ face, you need to get ready to dodge its flash bang attack. Its head will light up like a flash on a camera and stunning you and any other hunters caught in front of it. After a couple of small flashes go off, it will stand straight up, open its wings, and let out the big flash that actually stuns you. Roll so you outside of the AOE range to avoid this move.
Tail Slam
-
-
When the Gypceros lifts its tail in the air and beings to whip it around, it’s about to slam that tail down onto the ground. It will whip you, dealing quite a bit of damage. It only whips it once, so you just need to dodge to the left or right of the tail’s trajectory. Its tail grows in length when it tries to hit you, so it is much, much longer than you think it will be.
Face Slam
-
-
Gyceros will sometimes launch itself at you and slam its face into the ground after it lands. It has no tracking on this move, so it is pretty easy to get out of the way if you are prepared. When it hops in the air like this, you want to roll to the left or right of it to get out of the way of its body.
Death Fakeout
-
-
Gypceros can pretend to die, faking you out and tricking you into coming within melee range. You can tell it’s about to get back up when it starts to shake or heave as it lays on the ground. If you are trying to carve it before it gets up, you need to make sure to move out of the way as soon as it starts twitching. Avoid this attack by being outside its melee range when it comes “back” to life.
Gypceros Weaknesses and How to Fight
When getting ready to take down this monster, there are a few things you should keep in mind. The number one thing probably taking out its tail as soon as possible with the MHW sever parts mechanic, but here are the highlights of this fight that will help you get through it easily the first time.
- Gypceros can both poison and flash pod you, so bring materials with you for these status ailments.
- It takes the most damage from fire attacks and no damage from lightning.
- Aim for Gypceros’ tail to deal the most damage to it, especially with a sharp weapon or arrows.
- It can be carved when it is faking its death, but it is a pretty dangerous move to attempt if you aren’t ready for its surprise attack.
- Pitfall traps are a great choice when battling Gypceros.
Gypceros Drops
Since Gypceros is only available after you reach high-rank, it cannot drop any low-rank materials. You can make an armor set in Monster Hunter Wilds from this monster, but you will need to put it on farm to get all the materials you will need to complete it. It can also drop some other helpful components, like the Wyvern Gem and Toxin Sac.
