The actor behind Aloy in PlayStation‘s Horizon series, Ashly Burch, has responded to the recent leaks showing an AI-powered version of her character.
As has been made abundantly clear over the past few years, AI-powered technology is one of the biggest problems facing the creative arts, and something that most who work in games are actively trying to fight against. Even though SAG-AFTRA is literally striking on this very issue in gaming right now, that hasn’t stopped PlayStation and Guerilla from doing the wrong thing.
Earlier this week, leaked footage of an AI-powered version of the Horizon series’ protagonist Aloy was shared online, which resulted in a lot of negative responses from fans and developers alike, especially considering the themes of Horizon as a whole. Now, the actor behind Aloy, Ashly Burch, has shared her thoughts on the whole subject.
Ashly Burch Isn’t Happy About PlayStation’s AI Aloy Either
As reported by GamesRadar+, Burch took to Instagram to respond to the AI Aloy leaks, where she notes that she saw the tech demo earlier this week and was directly contacted by Guerilla Games to confirm that it doesn’t represent anything that’s “actively” in development. Guerilla also suggested that the tech demo didn’t use any of Burch’s performance capture or lines.
Even with those factors in mind, Burch says that the whole thing has made her “worried” about the art form of game performance, specifically pointing out that SAG-AFTRA is striking over this very reason right now because game companies want to use the technology. Burch worries that eventually a video like the AI Aloy tech demo might pop up that does use someone’s performance.
I feel worried. Not worried about Guerrilla specifically, or Horizon, or my performance, or my career specifically, even. I feel worried about this art form. Game performance as an art form. – Ashly Burch
Burch’s passionate video about AI Aloy and the dangers that she represents concludes with her saying that the idea of losing the fight against AI protections and being left with “no recourse” breaks her heart, as she wants there to be another generation of actors in gaming. PlayStation hasn’t publicly commented on the leak so far, but it certainly has some explaining to do considering everything that’s going on.
