Summary
- If you happened to claim a “free” copy of Alan Wake Remastered during January’s free trial of Alan Wake 2, then that copy is being revoked.
- A little over a month after Xbox users initially found the loophole, Microsoft has acknowledged that the game was never intended to be free.
- It wouldn’t be the first time a game has been outright removed from accounts.
Back in late January, Xbox users thought they had struck gold, when, during a free trial weekend of Alan Wake 2, claiming the trial led to the original Alan Wake Remastered becoming free to download and own. As is the case with most of these “glitches” and “oddities,” the loophole was promptly closed.
However, while the error was quickly fixed, those who had claimed the remastered game were seemingly free to keep it. That is, until Thursday.
As first shared on Twitter by Wario64 and later corroborated by Xbox users on Reddit, Xbox has reached out to gamers who claimed the game, acknowledging that it was never intended to be free. As such, the game has been revoked from user accounts.
Games Have Been Revoked Before
Oddly enough, this wouldn’t be the first time that a purchase has been revoked. Gamers may recall that, back in April 2024, The Crew, which had its servers go offline, was being removed from Ubisoft Connect accounts.
Of course, with the game’s servers no longer in service, there wasn’t much to do, anyway. But many argued that a company should have no right to do that in the first place, especially seeing that people paid for the game originally.
Beyond that, after Concord’s shutdown, the game was also similarly removed from accounts. Those with physical copies were still able to boot the game, though progressing past the title screen was impossible. Perhaps most famously, when P.T. was taken off the PlayStation Store, it was unable to be re-downloaded from a player’s library, even if they had previously claimed the demo. All of that is to say, revoking a game can and has happened, and it likely won’t stop anytime soon.
