Summary

  • It’s being widely reported that an official Oblivion remaster will launch soon.
  • With Skyblivion also launching this year, some are worried about legal issues.
  • The Skyblivion team isn’t concerned, however, saying that Bethesda has been supportive.

It’s being reported that a remake of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion is in the works, and will launch very soon. In fact, rumour has it that it could launch as soon as next month, with an announcement coming very soon.

While many are excited to dive back into what is a much loved game in the community, others have raised concerns over what this means for Skyblivion – the fan-made remake of Oblivion. Now, with Bethesda launching an official remake, some are fearful that the company will go after the fan project – although the creators themselves are not worried.

For anyone out of the loop, Skyblivion is a remake of Oblivion, made in Skyrim. It will release as a Skyrim mod, but you will also have to own Oblivion for it to work.

Skyblivion Could Clash With An Official Oblivion Remake

Hopefully, the Skyblivion team won’t face any issues

This was raised over in the Skyrim mods subreddit, as many members are understandably looking forward to Skyblivion’s launch. Initially, user Odd-Onion-6776 was just concerned that the official remake could “kill the hype” for Skyblivion, but some are worried that it could be much worse.

“All I’m hoping is that they don’t perceive Skyblivion as a threat to their own remake and want it shut down,” says Ketaminekhan.

Some agree. “I wouldn’t be surprised if Bethesda sent a [cease and desist] on Skyblivion once the remake is announced,” says stallion8426/

“That would be incredibly tone deaf, even for Bethesda,” replies ChocolateGoggles. “I’d just straight up stop buying their games.”

Despite these fears, the Skyblivion team don’t appear to be bothered. Speaking in the Discord, one of the developers said the team is “not worried about the project being taken down”. They also say they are in communications with Bethesda, so presumably, the studio would have given the modders a heads up if this was going to be a legal issue further down the line.

In any case, Skyblivion at least has a confirmed release of this year. On the other hand, the Oblivion remake is all just rumours and speculation, although it has been corroborated by multiple sources at this point. We’ll have to wait and see if there is any truth to the reports that it is launching in the coming weeks.
