Most armor sets in Monster Hunter Wilds come with set bonuses that activate when enough pieces are equipped. Black Eclipse, which is derived from the Gore Magala’s Tyranny bonus, is one such skill, and it’s one of the best ones available for DPS-focused builds.
Black Eclipse is a popular choice among players in the MH Wilds endgame, and for good reason. This guide covers what this skill is all about, as well as other armor skills that synergize well with it.

How Does Black Eclipse Work in Monster Hunter Wilds?
Black Eclipse is the set bonus provided by the Gore Magala armor that infects players with Frenzy while fighting large monsters, a status effect that increases the damage they take for a period of time. This may seem like a detriment, but it’s actually quite beneficial to players once they understand how the Frenzy status effect works.
In short, Frenzy doesn’t immediately apply its negative effect once a player is afflicted by it. Instead, you’ll have a decent amount of time to cleanse Frenzy by repeatedly attacking a monster. Successfully cleansing this status effect grants you bonus Affinity for a short while.
As of writing, Frenzy can only be afflicted by Gore Magala in MH Wilds, making it a niche status effect. However, with the Black Eclipse skill, players will be able to become affected by Frenzy regardless of what monster they fight, giving them the opportunity to get some free critical hit chance just by fighting.
Black Eclipse II, which you can get by wearing four Gore Magala armor pieces, additionally grants an Attack boost when Frenzy is cleansed.
Frenzy-Related Skills
One of the best skills to pair with Black Eclipse is the Antivirus skill in MH Wilds. This makes Frenzy easier to clear, and it gives players even more Affinity once the status effect is removed. To top that off, Antivirus is provided by the Level 1 Sane Jewel, making it very easy to slot-in.
Black Eclipse and Antivirus is a bread-and-butter combo for builds that want to achieve a 100 percent critical hit rate. To reach that point, players will need a weapon with high base Affinity and any combination of the following skills:
- Weakness Exploit
- Maximum Might
- Agitator
- Foray
- Tetrad Shot
- Latent Power
Most meta crit builds combine Weakness Exploit, Maximum Might, and Black Eclipse with Antivirus to reach very high crit rates. This usually involves pieces of the Arkveld, G. Arkveld, and Gore Magala sets plus a one-off helmet like Xu Wu Helm Beta
for Long Sword builds or G Fulgur Helm Beta
for Agitator-based setups.
When running Affinity builds, make sure to have Critical Boost in your weapon to make the most out of your crit rate.
