Summary
- Obsidian has remained non-committal about expansions for Avowed, but a new post on the studio’s forums could be a promising sign.
- Game director Carrie Patel has previously said that they’d like to do more with the game following its release.
- Obsidian has another game release on the way, but Avowed was likely developed by a different internal team than The Outer Worlds 2.
Before its release, Obsidian was non-committal about whether Avowed could receive expansions in the future. In an interview with Bloomberg, game director Carrie Patel alluded to the future of the game, saying “Now that we’ve built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I’d love to see us do more with it.”
The future of Avowed was always going to depend on how well the game performed, and the consensus appears to be that Avowed met or exceeded expectations. The game was well-received critically, holding an average critic score of 81 on OpenCritic. It also maintained a respectable average player count on Steam in the week following its release, especially when compared to other Game Pass titles. Finally, Obsidian is reportedly happy with the game’s sales.
Keep on Dreamscourgin’
A new post on Obsidian Entertainment’s forum (nice spot, GamesRadar+), suggests the team is preparing a roadmap that will outline the studio’s plans for the game over the next year. The post, from senior community manager Aarik Dorobiala, reads “Our team is committed to ongoing support. and we’re always looking for ways to improve. Your input is key to help us refine and expand Avowed, and we are excited to keep rolling out updates. Within the next few weeks, we are going to be releasing a roadmap that will go over some of the plans we have that will be coming to the game over the upcoming year, so keep your eyes peeled!”
This will likely come as a pleasant surprise to Avowed fans, who likely didn’t expect a ton of post-release support considering Obsidian is gearing up to release The Outer Worlds 2 later this year. Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2 were almost certainly developed by two different teams within Obsidian, but a trend we’ve seen at big studios over the years is that games become studio-wide collaborations as release day looms.
Of course, there’s no guarantee that Dorobiala is referring to expansions. Post-release support could include new features like New Game+, or perhaps Obsidian is porting the game to PlayStation 5. Still, there’s reason to be optimistic about expansions considering Patel’s comments before the game’s release.
Whether a potential expansion would bring us to an unexplored part of the Living Lands or somewhere else in the vast world of Eora remains to be seen. We’ll have to wait until Obsidian releases its roadmap for Avowed in the next few weeks.
