Tropical Islands Aren't the Only Far Cry Settings Worth Revisiting

Far Cry fans have been wondering for a while now what the next chapter in the franchise has in store. With Ubisoft’s recent woes, many are hoping that Far Cry will be a project that brings the company back into calmer waters, but this could prove tricky. Anticipation for the next entry is quickly building, and one of the biggest questions is about where the story will take place.

Two of Far Cry‘s best settings have been featured in the very first game and Far Cry 3, as they both take place in the Pacific. Each Far Cry setting has been wonderfully unique in its own way, though. Returning to the Pacific Islands would be exciting, but revisiting other locations that the Far Cry franchise has merely scratched the surface of would potentially be even more thrilling.

Far Cry 2 and Far Cry 5 Could Have the Most to Offer

  • Far Cry 2 takes place in an unknown country in Africa.
  • Far Cry 5 is set in the fictional place of Hope County, Montana.

Far Cry 2 is a standout entry in the series, as it introduced a lot of innovative ideas compared to its predecessor. Not only does Far Cry 2 really lean into the survival themes of the franchise, it also takes place within a fantastic setting. Africa is a massive country, and that gives Ubisoft plenty of areas to use as inspiration for a fictional country. Whether it’s the rain forest located in the Congo Basin or the Savanna, the Far Cry franchise could benefit greatly from showcasing more of what the country has to offer.

A major Far Cry 7 rumor is claiming that the game will feature a 72-hour in-game timer, which would be a massive shake-up for the series.

Far Cry 5 brings players to the vast landscape of the American state of Montana. Just like Africa, the United States of America is a massive country, boasting huge swaths of land, making Montana a perfect location for Far Cry to feature. Since exploration is central to the Far Cry series, a state as large as Montana really puts a player’s survival skills to the test. There are plenty of other areas of the country, though, that could be just as fascinating and filled with a lot of story potential.

  • The Appalachian region
  • New York City
  • Los Angeles
  • Florida’s everglades
  • Texas

America features a lot of states that have unique biomes and characteristics that could work wonders in a Far Cry game. It may be one country, but the varying regions of America can be vastly different with their own unique cultures and customs, making every state almost feel like its own little country.

Rumors and leaks have suggested that Far Cry 7‘s setting might be inspired by Korea.

A Far Cry Update is Long Overdue

Right now, there is no official word from Ubisoft about what is planned for the mainline Far Cry games. There have been plenty of rumors and supposed leaks, but nothing has really been officially confirmed yet. It’s possible that Far Cry 7 could shake things up by introducing a brand-new setting, of course, but retreading old ground in a fresh light could be just as compelling.

As of now, there is no telling where Far Cry 7 will be set, but once Ubisoft finally breaks the news, it will be one of the most important pieces of information regarding the game going forward. There is only room for speculation right now, and if Far Cry chooses to recycle some of its settings, it at least has plenty of great options to choose from.
