Silent Hill is full of symbolism, so we break down some of the most important monsters and what they mean.

With the talents of writer Ryukishi07 and composer Akira Yamaoka combined, we know we can expect quite the experience, but the trailer alone does a fine job of selling the game. Here, we will unpack the possible themes and hidden details in the newest Silent Hill f trailer.

Someone Is Actively Chasing Hinako

It Isn’t Just Her Inner Demons

While the game might not take place in the Silent Hill we’ve grown to know and fear, the town of Ebisugaoka can be just as nightmarish. We can expect Hinako’s inner demons to play a big role in what is going on. However, someone else seems to be taking an active role in tormenting Hinako, teasing her directly and even leaving drawings of her with the words ‘die’ written over them.

The word on the wall image is 死ね (die) while the phrase on the doll picture is 早く逃げて 取り返しが つかなくなる (run away quickly, or it will be too late to turn back).

Other characters might be trying to aid her, or at least warn her to leave before it is too late. Someone being directly antagonistic towards Hinako adds another layer to the mystery, and it might come to pass that our protagonist herself isn’t aware of how she wronged the one after her life.

Shu Seems To Be A Key Character

The Trailer Starts Talking About Hinako, Not To Her

Silent Hill f seems to aim at themes of friendships, betrayals, and the things we don’t want to see about ourselves. As such, the plot might revolve around the group of friends seen during the trailer and the turmoil that comes when feelings start bursting out.

A key character in these stories seems to be Shu since it is mentioned during the trailer by the antagonistic narrator. The only character who we know the name of is Hinako, but from the rest of the characters, the only male one might be this Shu individual.

The Many Monsters Shown

Dolls And Mannequins Galore

The corruption happening all around Ebisugaoka is flavored as a fungi infestation, festering and corroding everything in its wake. Due to this, we can expect more than a few enemies to be similar to the infected in The Last of Us.

However, the enemies shown in this trailer have more to do with dolls, mannequins, and poses of scarecrows. While mannequins are not new as an enemy inspiration in Silent Hill, their use here seems to be aimed at the artificial nature of these constructs, and the fake faces they portray.

She Might Be The Source Of Everything

The main character of a Silent Hill game being the architect of their own nightmare is certainly nothing new, so Hinako might be going down that path. We might not know for sure until we play the game ourselves, but we do have a slight hint: her footsteps when she sees her first enemy.

She’s unknowingly leaving a trail of slight corruption similar to the one affecting the town, at least based off of what remains when she raises her foot. While there is still someone else chasing her, it is hard to know if the enemies are her own fabrication, sent by an outside force, or a little bit of both.

The Pipe Might Be The Only Weapon

No Firearms In Sight

During the whole trailer and even the final promotional art, we see Hinako either unarmed or wielding a metal pipe, a staple weapon of the series. We don’t expect a game about a frail school girl to have lots of combat, but there seems to be at least some of it based on the weapon at hand.

Another detail of Hinako’s design is how her uniform keeps getting torn as the adventure progresses, but the pipe remains her only weapon. It isn’t clear if the clothes ripping will be a health mechanic, or if the trailer shows moments from all throughout the game; if the latter is true, then we can expect to wield that trusty pipe during our whole adventure.

Overarching Theme Of Masks

I Wear No Mask

Once you notice the mask theme throughout the trailer, you start seeing it everywhere, even in scenes that might not have anything to do with it. The biggest examples are the painting with the masked characters, and how Hinako’s face peels off as if ‘taking off a mask’ at the end of the trailer.

Wearing a mask comes with doing a performance, something also referenced by the name of the game: that lower case f might really be the musical notation ‘FORTE,’ 𝆑. This tells of a story where Hinako will play the innocent card even to herself, putting on a mask and performing that role even to her detriment.

The Drawings Of A Boy

Is That Shu?

With all these teenage characters and antagonistic behaviors, part of the plot of the game might revolve around a love triangle between Hinako and two of her friends, possibly with some tragedy in the middle. This is reinforced by the writer of the story being Ryukishi07, who worked on similar themes in When the Cicadas Cry.

Of course, this isn’t something based solely on there being teenagers, but more so on there being drawings of the male character drawn obsessively, one of them even having hearts around the face. We do see this character alone at another point in the trailer, but we don’t know if he is in the nightmare version of Ebisugaoka or somewhere else entirely.
