With so many things to do in running your farm in Fields of Mistria, it’s no surprise that you’ll want to befriend your neighbors to shake things up. Building relationships with the town is just one part of life in the town, but these budding friendships and romances can completely change the tone of the game.
One of the late-game characters you’ll meet is Caldarus, despite being in contact with him from the beginning. The events that unfold are a direct result of working together, but it’s all for the better. Here’s how to break the seal on Caldarus and begin your romance with him as a simple farmer.
Fields of Mistria is currently in Early Access, so details are subject to change. We’ll update our guides as needed!
How To Unlock Caldarus
Unlike the other romance candidates, Caldarus is not available right away. Despite chatting with him and doing his bidding from the beginning, he is a statue and not a person. At least until you make more progress.
To unlock Caldarus, you’ll need to delve deep into the mines and reach floor 60. Here, you’ll encounter the Fire Seal and need to break it to proceed.
Spoilers ahead for the main campaign, if you aren’t ready to learn a few more secrets in Mistria.
How To Break The Fire Seal
After getting to floor 60 in the mines, take the rubbing of the fire seal text to Juniper for translation. She’ll give you a list of items that are needed to progress further.
To break the fire seal, you need the following materials:
- Emerald
- Faceted Rock Gem
- Rockroot
- Sealing Scroll
Bring all the materials to the altar, then watch the cutscene that unfolds. Caldarus will take on a humanoid form and retreat to the Deep Woods.
How To Enter The Deep Woods
The deep woods are blocked by large and tangled thorns, over by the carpenter’s shop to the far east of town. To unlock this region, you’ll need to use the Dragon’s Breath spell to burn through the brambles.
From there, enter the woods and head right. Hop over the stump, or cut it down, then proceed north to the temple. Inside, you’ll find Caldarus resting.
After the cutscene plays, Caldarus will officially be up and about as a member of Mistria, though he stays almost exclusively at the temple. For obvious reasons.

Everyone has their favorite things, and Caldarus is no exception. Despite awakening early and being less powerful than usual, he enjoys his humanoid form and all the food the town has to offer.
When Caldarus is unlocked, he’ll stick to his temple in the Deep Woods. You’ll have to trek there to see him, or use the teleportation statue to move about quickly. He hopes you’ll visit him often, though he wouldn’t want to impose.
Below are all of Caldarus’s favorite gifts so you can slowly, but surely, win his scaly old heart:
While Caldarus accepts gifts upon awakening, you won’t earn any more points with him until the next update since he already has a golden heart.

Despite the Unknown Dragon Statuette resembling a dragon, it’s not a depiction of Caldarus–which suggests he has a history with whomever it’s based off of.
Caldarus Heart Events
Currently, there are no heart events for Caldarus, though you’ll notice that the heart icon beside his portrait is yellow in his humanoid form. This could be because he already feels close to you, having worked together since the beginning to explore the mines and practice magic.
He appeared rather distressed about the Sealing Scroll situation and awakened early to save you, which he wouldn’t do for just anyone.
Regardless, only single characters open to love have a heart next to their name, so perhaps we’ll see more of Caldarus in future updates!
