God of War Ragnarok Getting New Content Inspired by the Older Games

Santa Monica Studio has confirmed that God of War Ragnarok will receive a substantial update in the coming days. This forthcoming God of War Ragnarok update should be special for many longtime fans of the series, as it’ll add new content inspired by the Greek games to commemorate the franchise’s 20th anniversary.

Launched all the way back in 2005, the very first God of War game accrued lots of critical acclaim and commercial success, in turn spawning one of PlayStation’s most beloved franchises. Having used Greek mythology as its narrative backdrop for six games straight, the God of War series underwent a soft reboot in 2018, continuing the story in a new Norse mythology setting. 2022 saw the launch of God of War Ragnarok, the last mainline series entry, which ended the Norse saga and opened up various possibilities for the future.

With March 2025 marking 20 years since the release of the first God of War game, Santa Monica Studio is celebrating the occasion by gifting God of War Ragnarok players some nostalgic new content. An upcoming God of War Ragnarok update landing on PS4/PS5 and PC on Thursday, March 20, will add the Dark Odyssey collection, a bundle of in-game items that harken back to previous God of War titles. The name itself – Dark Odyssey – is a reference to the development codename for the first God of War game, and the collection will most notably include the Dark Odyssey Appearance for Kratos, a black-and-gold skin reminiscent of the reward for completing God of War 2 on its toughest God Mode difficulty.

Additionally, God of War Ragnarok players can equip Kratos with the Dark Odyssey Armor Set, which features a themed breastplate, belt, and bracers. Atreus and Freya, the two most prominent companion characters in God of War Ragnarok, also get vestments sporting the Dark Odyssey treatment. The black-and-gold color scheme extends to all of Kratos’ weapons and their attachments too, as well as the shields. It’s worth noting that the Dark Odyssey appearances can only be applied to the weapons when they’re fully upgraded, and this update will also add the ability to use the Edit Appearance feature for attachments and shield ronds.

While many God of War fans are elated at the free anniversary content drop, others are still waiting to learn whether an ambitious rumor is true. For several months now, rumors of a God of War Greek saga remastered collection have been floating around. Reports also claimed that these God of War re-releases will purportedly be announced around the franchise’s 20th anniversary celebration event on March 22. Unfortunately, Santa Monica Studio recently confirmed that it has no new God of War announcements planned for this event.
