Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster is a Big Hit

In a new Twitter post, Square Enix announced that Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster had sold five million copies worldwide. This impressive accomplishment has also had major repercussions for the franchise as a whole, with the Final Fantasy series now having sold 200 million copies since it began in 1987. The first three Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster titles were released for mobile devices and PC in July 2021, with a collection featuring the first six games released for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 in 2023. In September 2024, the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster collection was released for Xbox Series X/S without warning during Microsoft’s presentation at the Tokyo Game Show.

Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster Surpasses Five Million Copies Sold

Following the success of Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth, fans of the franchise are eager to see other past games remade for current hardware. Rumors of a Final Fantasy 9 remake have continued to swirl since 2023, with the most recent leak claiming that the title won’t be released until 2026 or later. Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake producer Masaaki Hayasaka recently stated that he would love to work on a Final Fantasy 6 remake, though the title’s original director, Yoshinori Kitase, claims that doing so in the same style as Final Fantasy 7 Remake would take about 20 years to complete.

Currently, franchise fans are awaiting news of the third and final entry in the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy. Additionally, Patch 7.2 for Final Fantasy 14 will be released on March 25, with the update promising to add a new “jog” function, additional main story quests, multiple job changes, and more.
