This article contains spoilers for One Piece’s Elbaf Arc.
Summary
- The Thousand Sunny lacks emotional storytelling and screen time compared to the Going Merry in One Piece.
- Franky may upgrade the Thousand Sunny with salvaged Adam wood from Elbaf, potentially increasing its size and defensive capabilities.
- Upgrading the Thousand Sunny during the Elbaf Arc could give the ship a much-needed story arc and incorporate the spirits of Elbaf.
Despite being the main source of transportation and the home of the Straw Hat Crew in One Piece, the Thousand Sunny doesn’t seem to have the same impact in the series as the previous ship, the Going Merry. Due to the lack of emotional storytelling and the limited screen time the ship has during longer arcs, the Thousand Sunny often feels overshadowed by more important aspects of the series. So far, no major storyline regarding the Thousand Sunny in One Piece has happened in the modern story.
However, despite not happening yet, there is always time for the Thousand Sunny to be more heavily featured in the modern story of One Piece. Luckily, the Elbaf Arc may be the perfect time for a story surrounding the ship of the Straw Hat Crew. Although there are more important issues currently plaguing the land of the Giants, a small storyline where Franky upgrades the Thousand Sunny in One Piece, could be the storyline the ship needs to find its place in the eyes of the community.

Franky Discovers The Treasure Tree Adam On Elbaf
The Source Of The Lumber That Made The Sunny
In One Piece, during the Water 7 Saga, Franky, the shipwright of the Straw Hat Crew, constructed his magnum opus, the Thousand Sunny. Made from the mystical and powerful wood of the Treasure Tree Adam, the Thousand Sunny is a technical marvel, limited only by Franky’s creativity and inventions. Although the ship has been a powerful tool for the Straw Hats, compared to One Piece’s Going Merry, the Thousand Sunny has felt more like a tool for the Straw Hats rather than a crew member.
That strongest tree’s name is Treasure Tree “Adam”. – Franky
During the Elbaf Arc of One Piece, Franky ends up discovering the source of Adam wood, the massive Treasure Tree Adam that holds the kingdom of Elbaf. Throughout the arc so far, Franky has been currently on a tour with the giant Ripley, who was likely the one who put the Adam wood into circulation, exploring various aspects of the tree, and learning its history. However, at the same time, after being freed, Loki has attacked the Treasure Tree Adam in One Piece, setting it on fire.
The Treasure Tree Adam May Be In Danger From Loki
Franky Could Utilize Any Salvaged Wood Removed Due To The Fire
- The Treasure Tree Could Require Extensive Trimming To Help With The Fire
- This Wood Could Still Be Of Use To Franky
As fans have learned during the Elbaf Arc of One Piece, the Treasure Tree Adam, being incredibly old and dry, is weak to both lightning and fire, requiring immediate action to take care of. This includes cutting off various parts of the Adam Tree in order to prevent the fire from spreading further. This aspect of the tree may be important in the upgrade of the Thousand Sunny, as the wood of the Adam tree is generally incredibly rare.

However, if Loki’s attack were to require a large portion of the Adam Tree to be cut off in order to help the rest of the tree survive, Franky could find a way of incorporating the usable parts that were cut off to upgrade the Thousand Sunny. Potentially, the Straw Hats shipwright, Franky, could increase the size of the ship, allowing it to accommodate more passengers, like a potential new Straw Hat, or even reinforce it, giving it even more defensive capabilities. On top of this, with extra Adam Wood, Franky may be able to create even smaller vessels that possess the same powerful attributes of the Sunny itself.
This Could Give The Thousand Sunny A Much-Needed Story Arc
The Sunny Could Carry The Will Of Elbaf With It
Additionally, outside of being an upgrade in terms of power, this upgrade to One Piece’s Thousand Sunny could also provide more story opportunities for the ship itself. Potentially, if Elbaf were to fall to ruin at the hands of Loki, the Thousand Sunny could live on, carrying the spirits of the Treasure Tree Adam and the Giants with it. This would add a level of personality that the ship was lacking, giving it even more of a reason to continue sailing.
A strong ship as bright as the sun that can cheerfully overcome a thousand seas.
In the end, while Elbaf may be the perfect opportunity to upgrade the Thousand Sunny, fans will most likely have to wait for the current chaos on Elbaf to clear. With the God’s Knights in One Piece making their move and Loki free, Franky may have to wait a bit until the conflict settles down before working on his ship. However, giving the Thousand Sunny an upgrade at the end of the Elbaf Arc in One Piece may be a strong way to end Franky’s story in the land of the Giants.
