Who is Aoi Kanzaki?
Demon Slayer introduces Aoi in Season 1, Episode 23. Aoi is a qualified Demon Slayer but decided to work as a helper at the Butterfly Mansion. The Butterfly Mansion is a mansion that often acts as a place of recovery for injured Demon Slayers.
Aoi not only leads the manor in Shinobu’s absence, but she also directly looks after the injured swordsmen by guiding their medication and planning a training regiment. She was largely responsible for Tanjiro and others’ quick recovery after their brutal battles at Mount Natagumo.
Why Does Aoi Not Fight As a Demon Slayer?
Aoi was definitely capable of becoming a stronger Demon Slayer as she passed the Final Selection. The Demon Slayer: Corps Records Official Fanbook revealed that she passed the same Final Selection as Muichiro Tokito, the Mist Hashira.
But despite her qualification, Aoi believed that she passed merely due to luck. She also admitted to being too afraid to go into battle and considered herself to be a coward. But, Tanjiro moved Aoi by believing that he would carry her help and emotions into battle with him.
Since you helped me out, Miss Aoi, you’re part of me now.
And I’m carrying all of your emotions onto the battlefield with me!
All right! Look after me if I get hurt again, okay?
– Tanjiro, Season 1, Episode 26
Does Aoi Know a Breathing Style?
Breathing Styles are essential to Demon Slayers. They not only help them strengthen their sword skills but also enhance their movements and endurance. Aoi, while training to become a Demon Slayer, picked up Water Breathing. This also makes it possible that she was probably trained by Sakonji Urokodaki, similar to Tanjiro, Sabito, and Makomo.
Why Water Breathing?
Water Breathing is one of the five main Breathing Styles that was created directly from Sun Breathing after making a few alterations. Water Breathing is considered the most common Breathing Style because of its ease of learning. Considering how Aoi considers herself to be unskilled, it’s not surprising that she was taught Water Breathing since even beginners with greater potential like Tanjiro started with Water Breathing.

Will Aoi Be Able to Fight Demons?
Aoi’s low self-esteem should not be mistaken as physical weakness. Being capable of passing the Final Selection already makes her stronger than an average human. She also has access to Water Breathing, one of the most versatile Breathing Styles.
She should not have a problem dealing with lower-level demons, similar to what we saw at the beginning of the anime. But she definitely falls back when dealing with slightly stronger demons, even as strong as the ones seen on Mount Natagumo.
