One of the first anime releases of 2025, Sakamoto Days brings the story of the titular character, a once great assassin, to Netflix. While it does have its intense fight scenes, it balances this with a lot of humor focused around Sakamoto’s new life as a husband, father, and convenience store owner.

Durarara
Albeit with a darker theme overall, Durarara has a twisting narrative that will keep you guessing for quite some time. With ties to the mafia, and a bit of humor here and there thanks to a wide array of side characters, it has a bit of everything.
It follows a young student who moves to the city to avoid his boring life, and a mystical woman who runs side-gigs as a courier. Mixed in is a plot about a mysterious online gang, government experiments, and plenty of intrigue.

Dandadan
Dandadan perfectly balances action and comedy and knows exactly what it’s doing, even if you don’t. The pacing of this anime is quite unique, skipping past a lot of things that other series would focus on for multiple episodes.
Following a pair of high-schoolers, one who believes in aliens, and the other who believes in spirits, the anime starts out with a rivalry and quickly becomes a bit more romantic. Sprinkled in are superpowers, plenty of comedy, and some surprisingly emotional moments.

The Disastrous Life Of Saiki K.
A humorous anime through and through, The Disastrous Life of Saiki K., often shortened to just Saiki K, is bright and cheerful, even when it is odd. If you like the plight of the psychic Shin in Sakamoto Days, then this might be a great follow-up anime for you.
A seemingly normal student, Saiki has the secret of being psychic, something that he really would rather leave behind in return for a normal life. However, he never seems that lucky and gets dragged into weird occurrences daily.

Trigun
A classic for many anime fans, although some might be more familiar with the remake. Trigun has been a go-to for anime fans who want a great mix of action and antics, plus some western flair thrown in for good measure.
Set in the future, Vash The Stampede moves through the desert planet Gunsmoke with goals of helping people and getting his memory back, of course. What he slowly finds out is that he is a dangerous fugitive with a hefty bounty on his head. That doesn’t stop him from getting into some wacky situations though.
The remake does have a more modern art style, but for more antics and a classic feel the older version is recommended.

Reborn
Over-the-top obsurdity isn’t anything new in anime as a whole, but few take it to the level that Reborn does. Many will recognize this one for being a Shonen Jump favorite in the early 2000s, but it’s still well-worth a watch even now.
A boy finds himself the heir to a ruthless and prestigious organized crime family, but he doesn’t know how to lead yet. Sent to help him is a well-known assassin. The catch is that he is an infant. What follows is a story that is consistently weird, but albeit quite a compelling tale.

Buddy Daddies
A pair of assassins must take the next stage in their relationship, whether they want to or not, when an orphaned child is left in their care. Buddy Daddies is an interesting plot for sure, with some humor, mob themes, and parental themes in common with Sakamoto Days.

Lupin III
An older addition to be sure, but one that still stands the test of time. Lupin III, or Lupin The Third if you prefer, is all about a trio who follow the titular bank robber, getting into all kinds of trouble as they travel around the world.
Lupin, the samurai Goemon, the gunslinger Jigen, and even the femme-fatale Fujiko must dodge insidious plots and the guile of Inspector Heiji if they want to make a living. Their antics are legendary in the anime world, something you should definitely experience.
The Lupin The Third movies also exist, although they often change more tonally, leaning to more adult themes and combat scenes.

Spy X Family
While many anime share similarities with Sakamoto Days, Spy X Family seems like it’s cut from the exact same cloth. There are definite similarities both in themes and storyline, but the overall tone of Spy X Family is more serious at times.
One of the greatest spies in the world must create a family for his next mission. What he doesn’t know is that his wife is also a spy, and their child is psychic, of course. It’s peculiar, whimsical at times, and surprisingly easy to watch given its odd plot.

Hinamatsuri
Nitta is a well-off yakuza member who takes his job incredibly seriously. Living alone, he does what he wants on his off-time. Until, that is, a girl appears needing a home.
The girl, surprising enough, also has psychic powers, which leads to Nitta’s life becoming far more hectic than he ever would have thought. It’s an interesting plot, and one backed-up by plenty of humor and drama that shows just how far a person will go for their found family.

The Way Of The House Husband
Told in short skits, The Way of the House Husband is perfect when you don’t want to follow along with a dramatic plot. In it, a yakuza member gives up his way of life, becoming a stay-at-home husband for the wife he adores.
Cooking, cleaning, and shopping for groceries are his day-to-day life, unless gang members get in his way. It’s a short watch, but surprisingly compelling in its humor and passion, which makes it a great palate cleanser after some of the longer anime out there.
