Fans React To Tom Holland’s First Look On Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey

Photos of Tom Holland from Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey set circulated online. However, one of the pictures reminded many of one character from The Lord of the Rings — Frodo.

Nolan’s upcoming movie The Odyssey is an adaptation of Homer’s epic poem of the same name. It has a star-studded cast, including Matt Damon as Odysseus, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Jon Bernthal and Tom Holland. In February, The Odyssey’s official account on X, formerly Twitter, shared the first look of Damon’s Odysseus, and it received an intense backlash due to the helmet being inaccurate. Today, photos of Holland from the set circulated on social media and received another level of scrutiny.

Matt Damon’s first look as Odysseus in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey was criticized by some due to inaccuracy.

The photos shared online feature the Spider-Man star on the set, wearing a brown top with a matching dark cape. Although the costume looked great on Holland, many said he reminded them of Frodo from The Lord of the Rings. “He kinda looks like Frodo,” one commented. Apparently, several agreed with Holland’s resemblance to Wood’s Frodo in the leaked images. “He would be perfect as Frodo! idk if it’s the costume or what it is, but the resemblance to Elijah Wood here is uncanny,” a different X user wrote. Another jokingly said that The Odyssey is “just code word for Lord of the Rings reboot.”

Meanwhile, there’s another photo of Holland with Bernthal from the set, and in the snap, he is wearing another set of costumes. Holland is rocking dark grey leather armor and wrist wraps over an off-white shirt, suggesting he is ready for action or a battle scene. Holland’s role in the movie has remained unconfirmed, but there are rumors that he will portray Odysseus’ son, Telemachus. Regardless, his attire aligns with that of a young warrior or adventurer. Holland is likely playing Telemachus, who travels to Pylos and Sparta to seek news about his father, Odysseus, based on his costume. However, one should still take that with a grain of salt as there is no concrete detail about his role in the anticipated tentpole.

As for Holland’s costume wearing a cape, there’s consensus that he looked like Frodo from The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Wood’s character, Frodo, wears the classic hobbit outfit — a loose white shirt with a soft collar, a brown vest, and high-waisted dark brown trousers. On his journey, he later wears a weathered gray cape, similar to what Holland wore in the leaked photos. Holland’s wavy hair in the shots, probably due to wind because they filmed on the shore, only elevates the likeness because it somewhat appeared curly, just like Frodo’s.

It’s still too early to comment on whether Holland’s custom is accurate or not because his character in the movie remains a mystery. However, his costume is clearly period-appropriate. Fans can expect more news and images while the movie is in production. Hopefully, they will change Damon’s helmet following the backlash and choose to be faithful to the source material to give the film the authenticity it deserves. At the same time, it will help the audience see and understand the events and fashion during the Archaic period of Greece.

The Odyssey will hit theaters on July 17, 2026.
