Critical Role Confirms It is Working On a Video Game

Summary

  • Critical Role is working on a video game set in Exandria, promising player control over story outcomes.
  • Travis Willingham teased the project but did not reveal a release date, suggesting more details will be shared soon.
  • Fans eagerly await updates on the video game following recent campaign conclusions and the possibility of a switch to a new TTRPG system.

Critical Role has officially confirmed it is “hard at work” on a video game that will feature the world of Exandria in a brand-new way. Few details are currently available for this project, but the Dungeons and Dragons actual play plans to announce its video game project very soon.

In December 2024, Critical Role CEO Travis Willingham teased an in-development video game during an interview with Rolling Stone. While he didn’t lock anything down, he said the company had been dabbling with the industry, and would have “something really exciting to share” either at the end of the year or in early 2025.

A few months later, Critical Role not only confirmed the existence of a secret video game project, but teased its impending formal announcement. In an interview with Business Insider, Willingham plainly stated that the company is “hard at work” on a video game set in the Critical Role universe. Though he did not share the project’s name or a timetable for when it would be released, he did say there were plans to announce it “any day.” Critical Role fan Meri shared the relevant excerpt from Business Insider article on Twitter.

Willingham also teased a few details about this mysterious game, including confirmation that it will take place within Exandria, the setting of the Critical Role campaigns created by dungeon master and chief creative officer Matthew Mercer. He referred to it as the “interactive slate” of the Critical Role universe, and that “[Players will] actually be getting their hand on the stick and controlling the outcome of the story, changing what might be possible from not just some of their favorite characters, but new offerings in the world of Exandria.” The genre is currently unknown, but it sounds like CR’s video game will be story-driven, feature cameos from some popular Critical Role characters, and possibly even contain “what if” scenarios for events within the world, in addition to original adventures that will expand on Exandria.

Critical Role just celebrated its 10-year anniversary on March 12, meaning an official video game announcement would be especially timely. Fans will probably not have to wait long to hear a reveal of its video game project – likely any time after Critical Role’s Exandria Wrap-Up show on March 13.

[Players will] actually be getting their hand on the stick and controlling the outcome of the story, changing what might be possible from not just some of their favorite characters, but new offerings in the world of Exandria.

That isn’t the only CR announcement fans are eagerly anticipating, as Critical Role recently finished the Bells Hells campaign and the Exandria Unlimited: Divergence mini-campaign. Given how drastically Campaign 3 ended, no one knows exactly what the next game is going to look like – or if Critical Role will switch over to Daggerheart, its new TTRPG system, rather than continue using Dungeons and Dragons. Critters will hopefully hear news about Critical Role’s actual play show and video game within the next couple of weeks.
